1025 - ENCORE-Black Travelers Need To Be Welcomed

Welcome to Gay Travel Today! I’m Teraj and I’ll be your guide as we explore, engage and indulge in the world of LGBTQ+ travel today.

According to a study by Mandala Research, African Americans contribute $63 billion each year to the travel industry – despite receiving much attention or visibility. To bring focus on the issue, a panel by New Travel Conference called “How to Make Travel More Welcoming to Black Travelers” took place in June, with travel leaders like DeMarco Williams from Forbes Travel and Travis Levius from CNN Travel leading the conversation. Each panelists brought up instances in which they hadn’t felt welcomed at destinations, how accommodations couldn’t be offered to meet their needs or even ways Blacks have been pigeon-holed with destructive stereotypes. Discussion was also focused on how the Black market needs to be broken down, rather than thrown together in one generalized group. To read more suggestions on how the industry needs to improve travel for Black travelers, search, “The Industry Needs to Expect Black Travelers” on OutTraveler. I would love to hear your insights on this and suggestions to the travel industry when it comes to welcoming Black travelers. Let us know by using the #GayTravelToday and #Sagitravel hashtags.
