Defining Discipleship

Discipleship is the process of becoming like Jesus. Discipleship requires a desire to grow and a willingness to change.

Discipleship is intimate. It is a deeply personal process of life transformation.

Discipleship requires openness and transparency. Discipleship causes transformation of a person’s life from the inside out, conforming them to the image of Christ.

There is an intentionality that is required for us to grow in discipleship and become conformed to the image of Christ.

Becoming a disciple of Christ is not an option for a believer. Biblically there is no distinction between being a follower, a believer, or a disciple. A follower is a believer, a believer is a disciple.

“To become a disciple of Jesus requires intentionality—a purposeful attempt to foster the discipleship process day in and day out.” – Richard Foster

“Christianity without discipleship is always Christianity without Christ.” – Dietrich Bonhoeffer

“Non-discipleship is the elephant in the church; it is not the many moral failures, financial abuses, or amazing general similarity between Christians and non- Christians. These are only the effects of the underlying problem.” – Dallas Willard
