Transcript:
The Rosenberg Library was officially opened in June of 1904 as one of the many generous gifts to the city of Galveston from Henry Rosenberg. The Rosenberg Library is the successor to the Galveston Mercantile Library, one of the first public libraries in Texas, which was founded in 1871.Rosenberg Library is one of the oldest public libraries in Texas. Rosenberg Library Association organized a charter granted by the State of Texas in July of 1900. This registered the library as a private corporation to give free library service to all Galvestonians. A year after the Library was opened, it acquired the collections of the Galveston Public Library, thus formalizing its new role as the public library for the city of Galveston. For over a century, this library has been an integral part of the Galveston community, providing educational services, historical resources, and access to millions of books and publications. The Rosenberg Library is home to the Galveston and Texas History Center, which collects materials relating to Galveston and early Texas. The collection includes business charters, manuscripts, the records of several organizations and churches in the area; and twentieth-century collections reflecting recent events and activities in Galveston and the upper Gulf Coast. The collection even contains artifacts from battles that have taken place in Galveston. While walking around the Rosenberg library, be sure to check out one of Henry Rosenbergโ€˜s water fountains on the north side of the building as well as the statue of Henry Rosenberg himself in front of the east entrance of the building. Enjoy access to the books, artifacts, and history that the Library has to offer!
