Kuhn's Wharf

Kuhn’s wharf was built throughout 1838-1839 and extended between 18th street to 20th street on Avenue A, also known as Water street in the 1800s, which is now the location of Harborside Drive. The wharf was acquired shortly after it was built by William Hendley and J.C. Kuhn it was improved to handle large shipments for large steam ships. Built adjacent to the Kuhn’s Wharf historical marker on Harborside and 20th street is the Hendley building. Constructed in 1860, This building was used as warehouse and offices for shipping operations at Kuhn’s wharf. During the Civil War, Kuhn’s Wharf was the dock of choice for the USS Harriet Lane as the confederacy captured the Union Navy vessel in what is known as the Battle of Galveston. The historical marker for Kuhn’s Wharf is located in front of the entrance to peanut butter warehouse at Harborside and 20th street.Â
