Gab & Jam Episode Ep 116 Shut Up and Sing: Cancel Culture and Artist’s Political Views Video Description

We are in a very different artistic/political climate than we have been used to. And it is true that an artist can risk his/her musical viability when they express their honest political opinions—either inside or outside of their art. So, given that there is much to lose by doing so, we have to ask—and answer—the question of whether or not artists should candidly share their political views.

Here are some examples of artists who have paid the price:
1. Dixie Chicks—that’s where the name of this episode is derived from
2. Neil Young
3. Taylor Swift
4. Gayle King
5. Kanye West

On the other hand, here are some artists who have benefited from doing so:
1. U2
2. Kid Rock
3. Ted Nugent
4. Eminem

Here are some things to consider when deciding which road to take:
1. Are you seeking the widest possible commercial opportunities? If so, you may not want to block yourself off on one political side or the other for fear of not getting mainstream support.
2. Are so steep in your politics that it expresses itself in every part of your art naturally? If so, then let it fly, because you are not going to be happy UNLESS you express it.
3. Take a position that you know won’t win you any fans from the opposite team, but will be wildly popular with your current fanbase.

What do you think? Do you believe it’s worth it for artists to express their political views in this age of cancel culture? Either way, we’d love to hear your thinking. Please share it in the comments below.
