Ep 161 Prince Music Marketing Mindset Video Description

—I guess that’s the weird new thing for me is that I am NOT in awe of folks, like I used to be. Even—and maybe—especially listening to that behind the scenes Prince YouTube series—I realize that EVEN Prince had goals and challenges (including with influence and money and of the gatekeepers not believing in him and him having to figure out ways to push his own creative goals forward). And that sounds utterly insane to me, but it also makes me feel like a kindred spirit, since that’s what we’re doing on our level.

Here are 5 reasons that even though Prince has been recognized as a major label product, he is really an ALPHA D.I.Y. Rock Star:

1. Finding ideas to mold into a creative product (i.e. “taking ideas?”)
2. Always thinking about ways to get your voice out directly to fans
3. Pushing to do ambitious, beyond the pale projects (movie, direct distribution, branding, in front of technology)—even though his ideas ended up being antithetical to growing his online presence)
4. No ONE music business relationship is the end all, be all (instead there is a CONSTANT negotiation and partnerships with folks who will help you get a little bit further along the path you have set YOURSELF on)
5. Realizing that you set your OWN goals (and don’t for a manager or A & R rep to set them for you)

What do you think? Did you know that Prince was doing all that? We’d love to hear what you think. Leave us a comment.
