Gab & Jam Episode 56 Are genres important anymore? Video Description

In this episode, we discuss whether or not categorizing music by genres is possible and whether or not it is beneficial. (If you prefer to listen to the podcast, click here: )

Not only is this a topic that is near and dear to our hearts—because we write songs that genre-bend greatly (which has always proved difficult to classify)—but as we are more actively seeking music licensing work, we are set with a conundrum; how to determine musical genre classifications. Inevitably, postings will list a genre classification that not only do we need to fit the music that we submit to, but also that seems ill-fitting to the song sample that is provided. That was the first and second reasons that we chose this topic.

The third reason is because recently, this has been a topic of conversation for a few of the many music-related blogs and radio shows that we listen to. Finally, we’ve been asking for several years now where does the music of a group like Twenty-One Pilots fit and haven’t really gotten a straight answer. Now, we’re starting to wonder if the need to classify by musical genres is necessary and if music culture has evolved beyond it. But that’s just our take. You be the judge….

Do you feel the need to focus on music genre classifications? If so, how do you REALLY discern between them? Since we want this to be a discussion between you and us, we would love to hear your take on this topic. Please leave your thoughts in the comments below.
