Typhoon Yanhua, or In-Fa as it is called also, hit the Chinese city of Zhoushan at 12:30pm local time according to state media and the BBC.

The typhoon has exhibited sustained wind speeds up to 137 kilometers per hour.

In Shanghai, some businesses have been shuttered in preparation for the typhoon.

Tens of thousands of residential units were also cleared out in Shanghai, as a precaution before the storm hits there.

The recent population growth in China has made it a challenge for emergency authorities to safeguard against all manner of flooding, yet the current death toll — below 60 — is far less suffering than some had expected, given how strong the typhoon appears to be.

This is a developing story, and more information will be added as it becomes available.
