CBD Therapeutic Use Takes Off In Washington, D.C.

The CBD craze has taken its next step in Washington, D.C. and in surrounding Virginia and Maryland -- where boutique "CBD shops" are popping up, and where mainstream pharmacies have begun selling CBD products, with a serious in-store marketing push in many cases.

What is CBD, should you be using it, and why is it proliferating across the United States right now?

Last year's passage of the farm bill in Congress contained language that effectively legalized hemp cultivation and sale in the USA, including the sale of its non-psychoactive constituent Cannabidiol, or CBD.

For many years, CBD has enjoyed a reputation online as a nearly magical elixir for a wide variety of physical ailments -- from bone fractures to heart disease to childhood seizures, which is where a lot of the recent mainstream media attention has been focused.

Until the farm bill's passage in late 2018, hemp-based CBD was in a legal gray area, with many large firms unwilling to sell or manufacture it due to its similarity to the marijuana plant, which is still federally prohibited in the United States (although more than 30 States, and the District of Columbia, now recognize the benefits of marijuana and offer medical and/or recreational access to it).

Now legal, with a more detailed framework expected to be released by the FDA later this year or next year, CBD is enjoying a genuine renaissance in the US.

The products you find in stores today are typically US-made, coming from domestic hemp farms mostly in Kentucky, Colorado, and elsewhere.

A high quality 1000mg CBD tincture can cost between $80 to $120, with CBD vape cartridges costing from $30 to $60 or so. A number of CBD salves and creams are also becoming available in stores.

As with any product, going with a brand name may be a good idea until you get familiar with the CBD market -- Green Roads, CBD Living, and Medterra are all well known brands showing up in stores here in D.C.

Due to the fact CBD isolate is non-psychoactive, and using it will not show up positive on a Marijuana drug test, many in law enforcement, the military, and related critical fields are finding benefit from this supplement. Users report decreased inflammation, improved circulation, quickened healing time after sports injuries, and a range of purported anti-aging effects.

Since CBD products have only been legal since last year, and since institutional published research on CBD is still scarce, we don't have much yet in terms of official data... but the online word of mouth is strong, and growing.
