I kicked against the pricks for a long time trying to avoid being mentored because was a know it all, I thought that if i just read all the same books and listened to the same people then i would be able to figure it out all on my own.

The problem with this thought process is that we have conformation bias and we think "I have heard this before and I have tried it and it did not work" but in reality we only thought about doing it.
