On episode 6 of the podcast I sit down to talk athletic development with John Garrish of North Broward Preparatory school located in Coconut Creek, Florida. John is the head track and field coach at the school, he is also the head of athletic development. We discuss his creation and involvement in Speed school, a free athletic and speed development session he runs with youth from surrounding neighborhoods. We discuss his view on speed development as well as the methods that he employs to advance athletes. Within the discussion there is a natural tendency to lean towards the concept of motor learning and allowing for athletes to find methods that deliver the best results. I found this really refreshing as often times we see ourselves coaching towards one method, rather then employing constraints to allow for athletes to develop the most economical and meaningful manner of progression. We discuss the methods of autoregulation and individualization he utilizes to best serve his athletes. We discuss how and why he utilizes throws to advance athletes and give them appropriate stimulus. We also talk about how he had a philosophical shift in not letting today ruin tomorrow that is really applicable when looking at the grand scheme of things. Overall this podcast provides a wide variety of useful information that coaches can take and access on a variety of topics directly related to athletic development.
