Friendly Interrogation

17 episodes - English - Latest episode: over 2 years ago -

Terry Border has been making images for the internet to share since 2006, along with many picture books too. He loves what he does, but his job has one BIG problem - he works from home, and doesn't see enough people. So he's decided that making a podcast is a good excuse to lure people into talking to him (sneaky!). You're invited to listen along as he lightheartedly questions artists he admires about specific pieces, and also to non-artists about things they do that he's curious about.

November 16, 2020 00:00 - 58 minutes - 40.5 MB

I got to speak with Martha Haversham about her path to her present project known as Smallditch. How utter desperation and frustration led to finding success when she decided to amuse herself, which is something I know a little about. How growing up as a daughter of a Conde Nast photographer father and a dancer mother helped shape her outlook on the arts, and how we both could care less about technical aspects of anything to do with photography (a running theme of me finding people who feel l...

This was an important ...

Recently I got to talk to Lydia Ricci about her tiny, nostalgic sculptures, her process, and her stop-motion videos. We also talk about the affects of family expectations (whether real or imagined for me, I suppose). During our conversation I realize that I'm avoiding the art making phase of self-doubt and pushing through anyway. It will make more sense when you listen, I think? Lydia is known as Lydia__Ricci on Instagram, and you can go here for a site just about her Scraps project. And go...

This week I get to talk to my pal Chris Sickels, of Red Nose Studio fame. He's won more awards than you can shake a stick at, and let me tell you, that can really get on another artist's nerves. I manage to rise above my petty jealousy and remain friends with him anyway. Chris has illustrated five picture books, created many memorable magazine illustrations, built worlds in order to make beautiful book covers, and managed to stick more than a toe in stop motion animation (I'd say at least kn...

In this episode we talk about a piece she created for a new restaurant by painting Dolly Parton onto a canvas made of 15,300 guitar picks. Then, she kindly recounts the trials of discovering how to drip colorful paints down the wall of a busy building's lobby. I like hearing the processes that artists go through to make a project happen, so I especially enjoyed our talk. As a bonus, you can hear me talk about my memories o...
