The guest for this episode is cartoonist, educator, and author, Joel Christian Gill, writer and illustrator of Fights: One Boy’s Triumph Over Violence. Fights is a gripping memoir of the author’s upbringing fighting through the abuse from the people he encountered starting in his early childhood. It touched on so many forms of abuse and how he had to fight is way out of it all. It’s also about how to break that cycle of abuse from your own people and the people that should care about you and have your back.

During our conversation, Joel shared with us his motivation to write Fights and tackling all these issues of abuse that present in his life and detailed in the book. Joel also shares a lot of great information about how he was able to break this abusive cycle within his own family since becoming a father and how abuse is present in various communities.
