Tom Pless was an electronics teacher at Dundalk High School and in 1982 started 97 Underground with a group of his students as the "school radio station". What started out as a 10 watt station that only aired at night and on weekends became a legendary Baltimore radio station, Baltimore's home of heavy metal. They were the first to play bands such as Metallica and Guns and Roses, and were very supportive of the local music scene, giving local bands an opportunity to get their material played, get interviewed, and have their shows announced on the air. They sponsored countless concerts and events over the years and in 1987 released the 97 Underground album "The Beast from the East Vol 1" which featured all Maryland based bands. In recent years, 97 Underground has made a comeback as an internet station- 97 Underground.com- Pure Rock Worldwide.
