Jesus mentions persecution in these 3 verses, so let's put them together. The word used also means to follow after or pursue. It can be used negatively or positively. But notice the progression. First, we're persecuted for righteousness, seeking justice in our lives and in the world. Second is for following Jesus. And third, the prophets were persecuted because they spoke for God. Jesus is associating himself with God and I believe every Jew who heard this live was surprised by his comments. This is radical stuff. How can you speak for Jesus and seek justice in your world today? Expect some people speaking evil against you when you do.
