3    I was lucky enough to get in working with a lot of speakers bureaus early in my comedy career. They booked me into a lot of corporate gigs and I moved out of the comedy clubs and into better paying, better travel gigs. There were agents who really liked me, and after a few years I came out with an updated video tape. Of course I wanted feedback on it, so I sent it out to the agent. And never heard anything, not a peep. So I called one of them. I got the guy on the phone, and I asked him if he would look at my tape. He just laughed. He said Jan, I have hundreds of tapes to look at. I like you. I like your humor. I book you when I can. Please don't make me look at your tape.

This week I'm talking about how to succeed when you'll never be THE top person in your field. There are hundreds of successful basketball players, and only one Michael Jordan. That doesn’t' mean you can't be a professional basketball player. But there are some things you can do to help you be more successful. My tip . . . I realized from talking to that agent, don't bug the people who already like you and are helping you out. I learned from that conversation that my best strategy was to leave the agents alone. I mailed snail mail one fun promo each month to remind them that I'm here, but I didn't call and I didn't email. And I got booked a lot!

Check out my YouTube videos at Jan McInnis Comedian and you'll see if they're any good or not! Ha ha. I did not get any agent's input.

That's it for today. Take care and enjoy your journey.
