Mattie and her friends are very concerned about Josh. He's been acting weird. Mattie goes to to check in him and notices that his place is an absolute dumpster. Josh has her wait in the kitchen and while he's out of the room, Mattie is disturbed to see red tape on the windows and even more freaked out when she finds Josh's cat locked in a closet dying of malnutrition. Horrified, Mattie runs to find Josh but he has committed suicide with an internet cable. This leads her on a chase to figure out what happened. Soon, her and her friends are receiving instant messages on the computer from Josh and assume it's his computer malfunctioning back at his old apartment. When Veronica Mars - I mean Mattie -  goes to investigate THAT, she finds his computer was sold by his landlord days earlier. Mattie sleuths some more and finds Dex. He explains that the computer was busted long before he got it but he uncovered some disturbing data from the fried hard drive. A series of images shows tortured souls looking around dark rooms and making strange faces. Dex thinks it's a kinky thing, but Mattie has no time for any conversation aside to figure out what's going on. As she's uncovering this material and handing out red tape (that was sent by Josh before he died so that they could keep "them" out) - the whole town begins acting strange. Slowly her friends become haunted by whatever "they" are. Finally, Mattie discovers that Josh and his friends accidentally opened a portal to a ghost world and now the partition is open and anywhere there is wifi- no, internet! - no, electricity! - no, phone lines! the ghosts lie in wait to ensnare their prey. Mattie and Dex try to unleash a virus that will close the haunted frequency and end up narrowly escaping tech ghosts and run until their cell signal stops. It seems Mattie will be living off grid for the foreseeable future.
