Actress Jean Seberg is returning to California from France, where she is kind of a big deal. On her flight, she meets Hakim Jamal - a civil rights activist who's is in a coalition with the Black Panthers. Seberg soon allies herself with the cause, offering financial support and serving as a host for several meetings. She also strikes up a romance with Hakim, but their affair alienates them both from the Black Panthers and their families. Further complicating matters are Jean's growing suspicions that she's being spied on. Now a paranoid and nervous wreck, Jean has her suspicions confirmed when a young FBI agent reveals that she's been targeted by the feds for her association with Hakim and the Black Panthers. With this knowledge weighing on her, Jean returns to France - and never works in America again.
