Bridget Sullivan is the new maid for the Borden family in Fall River, Massachusetts. She quickly strikes up a friendship with the Bordens' adult daughter Lizzie,  thanks to a shared interest in reading. As Bridget and Lizzie grow closer, Bridget's relationship with the family patriarch becomes troubled and abusive, adding to growing discord in the Borden home.
Bridget and Lizzie's interest in each other soon becomes romantic, but once Mr. Borden discovers their relationship, he forbids them from spending time together. Bridget is then brought in to a murder plot by Lizzie, and becomes an accomplice to the murder of Mr. and Mrs. Borden. Following Lizzie's arrest, Bridget testifies in Lizzie's defense, then leaves Fall River.
