6th of June marks a significant day in Sweden whereby this is the day in history when Gustav Vasa was elected as king after the dissolution from the Kalmar Union in 1523. The day which was originally celebrated as the Swedish Flag Day (Svenska flaggans dag) is now a day to be celebrated as a national day. Don't be alarmed if your Swedish friends may not seem patriotic. They are indeed patriotic as you can see at events such as during a football match or Eurovision Song Contest. Skansen will usually be packed on this day as the Swedes wait eagerly for the arrival of the Royal Family (who don on the traditional costume), followed by a concert by homegrown artists. This is also a day where the Swedish flags are permitted to be displayed. The Swedes celebrate this day with fläderblomssaft bubblies and some gräddtårta med jordgubbar. Happy National Day!!
