Singer/songwriter Genevieve Stokes meticulously crafts alt-pop gems that belie her 18 years. The Portland, Maine based artist crosses a multitude of sonic territories positioned with poignancy, honesty, and unfaltering energy. Stokes’ musical brush paints with a vivid color illustrating a loss of youthful innocence. The narratives are rooted in dealing with the aftermaths of adolescent heartache and the often-distressing moments of coming-of-age decisions.

Today Genevieve Stokes shares her single “Running Away,” a visceral recollection of the intense feelings associated with newfound love performed over ruminating piano keys and longing melodies. The track presents a distant and dreamy soundscape yet still offers a sense of yearning at its underlying core. In the song, Stokes confronts self-understanding and emotional awareness.

Genevieve Stokes says this of her new single: “‘Running Away’ was written during an emotionally turbulent time in my life. Finding someone I had a strong connection with brought up emotions I had never felt so intensely. It’s exciting and new, but also overwhelming. I wasn’t sure if my feelings were fully reciprocated and I was too afraid to ask. The song is a representation of how I overthought and tormented myself over my feelings.”

Prior to “Running Away,” Genevieve Stokes released “Surface Tension” in February 2020. Led by the tranquility of the piano and beatific vocals, Stokes’ sheds light on young relationships through attentive songwriting arriving on the themes of anxiety-filled loneliness and late-night self-reflection.

Performing as early as the age of 7, Stokes was inspired by Regina Spektor’s lyricism and creativity. She was drawn to the concepts she sang about, and the sincerity of her music. Her most recent inspirations are Frank Ocean, Bon Iver, and Big Thief's Adrianne Lenker. Stokes’ music is created through the lens of these influences by incorporating both electronic and acoustic elements.

Genevieve Stokes’ upcoming debut EP, out this summer, is a bold collection of songs conceived initially as part of a senior year project and marks the kick-off of a fresh and triumphant new force in music.
