Nike is sent to the Sun Kingdom to be married and she comes from the Principality of Rain. The Sun King Livi sees the world as an evil world that needs to be cleaned up and he is cold and shows no mercy to anyone but Nike. And her being there is what starts to soften Livi's, hardened heart.
