Fear Of A Craft Beer Planet Podcast

166 episodes - English - Latest episode: over 3 years ago - ★★★★★ - 38 ratings

Fear Of A Craft Beer Planet is a craft beer podcast for music fans. Using their expertise in beer and music, these four lifelong friends Jay Rose, Rob Forczek, James “Richard” Rabic bring brewers and beers to every episode, while providing insider knowledge on the exploding craft beer industry. The podcast is a part of the Osiris Media Network which is a national network that partners with JamBase.com. The show works because Richard is a beer novice while Jay Rose and Rob have seen the craft beer business grow up and become what it is today. They approach the show in the same way they would approach improvising on stage as musicians; not much planning and minimal actual “show prep.” It’s a free-wheeling conversation about beer, the business of beer, and the parallels between the beer business and the music business. Beers are consumed and discussed, stories are told, and hopefully lessons are learned. Hopefully....

#139 The Annual Holiday-dud Extravaganza

December 24, 2020 16:11 - 2 hours - 143 MB

Been a minute since we got together virtually to record an actual podcast, but the planets and stars aligned this week and we made it happen. We try to wrap up a strange year, Richard gives us a glimpse into what it's like being a 47 year old savage, there's a Hendrix vs Eddie Van Halen Discussion and we drink a few pops. Hopefully this episode finds you safe and well, we'll see you in 2021.

#138 Ann Obenchain Director Of Marketing For The Brewers Association

October 09, 2020 03:11 - 1 hour - 93.4 MB

If you're listening to this podcast there's a good chance you're a craft beer devotee and as such, you are acutely aware that we SHOULD be waist-deep in what is usually Beer Fest Season. Unfortunately that's not a thing right now, but the folks at the Brewers Association have not let a pandemic discourage them. The Brewers Association is responsible for putting on some of the biggest and best events on the craft beer calendar every year. Events such as SAVOR, and the crown jewel of ...

#137 A Podcast About Nothing

October 05, 2020 21:55 - 2 hours - 119 MB

You've heard of the show about nothing, this is the podcast about nothing. Just 4 of us chewing the fat and drinking beers. Rob admits he's finally at his breaking point with our current social situation. And from there, we touch on a few different themes that are relavant to the times we find ourselves in. Sometimes its nice to tune everything out and just laugh along with 4 fellas about nothing.

#136 Hard Kombucha? Yes Hard Kombucha

August 09, 2020 18:22 - 1 hour - 100 MB

As hard seltzers continue to gain in popularity because of the low carb, no sugar bit, a new category has emerged in their wake. The "Better For You" category. (notice it's not the GOOD for you category, because it's BETTER for you than saaaaaay beer and spirits) This category has slowly and quietly been building in popularity over the last few months. One of the break out brands in the category is a Hard Kombucha from the West Coast called Flying Embers. Brendan McLane, Director Of Sales f...

#135 The Meeting That Turned Into an Episode

July 27, 2020 21:55 - 1 hour - 86.5 MB

So we've been caught in sort of a tough spot recently. In light of the current events, we've been concerned that our name and logo would cause some problems online with people that don't know who we are or what we do, so we have not released anything in a little while. We spent a few weeks contemplating a name change (The Pilsnerds was a suggestion that didn't really have legs), asking people all over the place what we should do, and processing the situation as a whole. The general consensu...

#134 It's A Weird Time To Be A Human

June 19, 2020 17:11 - 2 hours - 121 MB

We're not really sure what to say about any of it, but that didn't stop us from trying to make some sort of sense of the current state of affairs. We cracked a couple beers and just hung out. We felt like we needed a hang to talk through things a little bit. There are a couple inconsequential ha-ha's, but the overall tone of this one reflects what we're feeling right now. We did the best we could to unpack the situation, hope it helps a little.

#133 The Continuing Corona Chronicles With No Actual Corona

May 25, 2020 18:22 - 3 hours - 172 MB

We start with a great guest in the Green Room, Dan Jost. Dan is a smokin' guitar player from the South Jerz/Philly area. Dan is doing a fundraiser on Facebook Live that will help provide PPE for the Inspira Hospital Group in South Jersey. Jump on Dan's FB page to see how to donate. We're still doing the podcast from home, seems to be working. Our Friend Stephen Brahm stops in to talk about the airline biz and where it's all headed. We open a few beers, talk about little Richard, and celebr...

#132 Innnn Theory....

May 15, 2020 19:33 - 1 hour - 109 MB

Ryan Egan cracked a new beer from Tonewood on this one called "String Theory." It reminded us of how whenever we ask Richard a question about the production end of the podcast, he gives a long detailed answer, pauses, and finishes with a very confidence-inducing "Innnnn theory...." Jay Rose opens a gang of beers that have never been available in NJ before, Rob spikes a new Stone beer with Tequila, and Richard lounges carelessly on couch as we attempt another addition of the FOACBP Quarantine...

#131 No Agreement: Tony Allen Tribute

May 08, 2020 19:33 - 1 hour - 98.1 MB

Tony Allen, who has been dubbed the father of Afro-Beat, died at the age 80 last week on the day we recorded this. If you listen to us at all, you know that 3 of us are drummers and Tony Allen was a huge influence on us. His style and ferocity as a player were as unique as the music he was associated with. We pay tribute to Tony and Afro-Beat with a few beers, Jay Rose actually cracked (and finished by himself) a bottle of wine, and we continue to try make some sort of sense of our current s...

#130 Work That Phatt

May 01, 2020 08:20 - 2 hours - 154 MB

Our title comes from a Prince song that is so horrible that it's absolutely brilliant. It's tough to find online but it's out there. Phatt is also one of the many nicknames Richard has had over the years, with that spelling (technically he added a "Q" at the end later but that's another tale for another time). Richard has been working around the clock at a radio station during the shutdown and still finds time to get this podcast produced and ready for us to release. Phatty-Q this one's for ...

#129 The Continuing Quarantine Chronicles

April 20, 2020 20:20 - 2 hours - 117 MB

We continue the Quarantine Chronicles series by digging a little deeper into the effects of the shut down on bars and restaurants. We talk about the ridiculous show on Netflix about a craft brewery, spoiler alert: it's god awful. Beers were consumed, Richard chimes in from the road, Rob drops some Stone 4/20 brewing science, JR found a Public Enemy sample, and Ryan Egan keeps everyone on task.

#128 Craft Beer In These Uncertain Times

April 15, 2020 20:20 - 2 hours - 111 MB

In these uncertain times, we at Fear of a Craft Beer Planet want you to know that we're here for you. We're tirelessly drinking beer and creating content in our pajamas to provide you with the finest quality of drunken audio silliness. Here is a fine example of that in a couple quick segments. The first segment is with us, we get into the New Pearl Jam album, discuss the Waldo's, and their connection to the Dead and the 420 myth. Second segment features our pal Cully Naramore from Tree Hous...

#127 A Band Of Brothers

April 06, 2020 13:00 - 2 hours - 137 MB

In segment one we explore what was basically the last live show anyone attended. Life long friend and listener to the podcast Keith Oltman celebrated his 45th birthday at MSG for the Brother's Show. It turned out to be an incredible show and Keith gives us his rundown of the show and what the vibes were like inside MSG that night. On Segment two we welcome our West Coast brothers Aaron and Apple from the No Simple Road Podcast! We break down the current state of national affairs we now find...

#126 It Only Took A Global Pandemic, But Here We Are...

March 30, 2020 07:33 - 2 hours - 121 MB

So it took a global pandemic and some crafty manipulation of online meeting apps that we've all been using for work, but WE DID IT! We recorded an episode virtually! It's been 4 long months since we released anything and all that gets explained through the episode. The world is a FAR different place now than it was the last time we recorded an episode, both globally and personally for all of us. We discuss how the current world situation is impacting the beer world, Ryan Egan's home brewing ...

#125 We Used To Love The Black Crowes

November 22, 2019 18:11 - 1 hour - 105 MB

With the official announcement of the "New Black Crowes" tour dates, we had some things to say about it that weren't exactly.... glowing. We drank an English Barleywine from 2014, a new Tonewood beer, and the world's most perfect beer, Sierra Nevada Celebration.

#124 The Underground Bunker Studio

November 04, 2019 15:00 - 2 hours - 142 MB

This one was recorded in an underground bunker studio in an undisclosed location for no real reason. Richard introduces us to Black Stag Brewing, we crack a couple Victory beers, and a sour from Edmund's Oast. We discuss the new book by Steve Gorman called Hard To Handle: The Life And Death Of The Black Crowes and the eerie similarities between the Black Crowes and the band Rob and Jay Rose were in together. 123 You've Got Questions, We've Got Answers (sort of) Live from the Tonewood Brewing operations office

October 14, 2019 07:33 - 2 hours - 135 MB

Some of you may have noticed we took a break! We did, and it was longer than we had intended. We go through what caused the break, what made it a really long break, we get reacquainted with each other and with beer in general (for one of us). Sometimes you need a break and we definitely needed a break. It'll all make sense when you listen. Thanks for sticking around and giving a hoot about us and this beer-soaked circus we call a podcast.

#122 Down on the Farm With Hilary and Blair from Rabbit Hill Farm and Malt House

August 13, 2019 13:46 - 1 hour - 81.4 MB

Hilary Barile and Blair Bakker are 5th generation farmers at Rabbit Hill Farms in Shiloh NJ. For 4 generations Rabbit Hill was known for their Jersey Fresh potatoes. As American diets started shifting away from carbs, potatoes started feeling the pinch and Rabbit Hill had some decisions to make. At the same time, Hilary and Blair started noticing craft breweries and distilleries sprouting up in every direction in NJ. They had a brainstorm to grow barley, malt it themselves, and sell it to NJ...

#121 Founders Brewing Wrap-Up With Natalie Crystal from Founders

July 30, 2019 01:00 - 1 hour - 77.7 MB

After we hung out with Dave Engbers and and Bob Kaiser on the phone in the last episode, we wrapped up the calls live with Natalie Crystal, New Jersey and Delaware Area Sales Manager for Founders. You’ll notice Natalie took the place of our host Jay Rose for this episode, he was VERY BUSY and had to hurry out the door after the phone calls. Nat does an awesome job mixing it up with Rob and Richard while opening a few heavy hitters from Founders including Mas' Agave, Blushing Monk, and Barrel...

#120 Dave Engbers, Bob Kaiser, and Natalie Crystal from Founders Brewing

July 22, 2019 17:11 - 1 hour - 103 MB

This time around we welcome Founders Brewing to the podcast. Co-Founder, Dave Engbers calls in for the first half and talks about the humble beginnings of Founders, how some of their more popular styles came to be, and even some guitar talk. For the second half, we dial Bob Kaiser, Director of Business Analytics for Founders. Bob is loosely credited with putting craft beer in 15 packs which completely changed the retail landscape and he's a huge music fan. Sitting in with us live is Natalie ...

#117 Live From Forest and Main Brewing Part 2

July 04, 2019 07:33 - 1 hour - 108 MB

Part 2 from Forest and Main Brewing finds us hanging with Scott Hatch from Crime and Punishment and Fermentery Form Brewing, Kevin from Hidden River Brewing, and Gerard and Dan, the owners of Forest and Main. There's tons of great info and music talk mixed with some science and even some existentialism for fun. We do a pretty good job of holding the podcast together while the brewers were on, and then the guys from the band The Pool Boys rolled in. That's exactly where the podcast came off t...

We talk about old school lot beers, how Heady has become the official beer of Phish lots, and what the future holds for The Alchemist.

#114 Stone Brewing Groundbreaking Collaborations GIANT BOTTLES

June 07, 2019 07:33 - 2 hours - 111 MB

This time around we did an episode in our make-shift studio, the Tonewood Brewing glassware closet with no windows and no air, while it was a beautiful Spring day outside. We made the best of our situation by opening 3, 1.5 liter bottles from the Stone Brewing Groundbreaking Collaborations series. All three beers were magical and we decided that with the recent closing of the Stone Berlin Brewery, these bottles are now collectors items. We have a few bottles left in the series that we'll op...

If you listen to us already and you’re into things that happen in the beer world, then there’s a solid chance you've heard the news that Boston Beer (Sam Adams) and Dogfish Head Brewing have merged to create one company and you probably have an opinion about it. If you haven't heard, then please allow us to break the news here. After the news broke, we had a few days to digest everything and look at it from all sides which some of us needed to do, and others of us did not. As you can imagine...

#112 Chris Burke, Chris Mazzone and Josh Kizitaff From Eight and Sand Brewing Woodbury NJ

May 12, 2019 07:33 - 1 hour - 96.3 MB

Eight and Sand Brewing is located in Woodbury NJ where they’re making great beer in a beautiful facility. We have an old connection to Chris and Chris from Eight and Sand. Before they were making beer commercially, they were home brewers that would buy their beer from Jay Rose when he worked at the beer store back in the early 2010’s. Even back then they would come into the store and talk about plans to open a local brewery. Well, they succeeded. They are making everything from crystal clear...

#110 Jersey Beer Guys and a Girl Podcast at The Atlantic City Beer and Music Festival

April 29, 2019 07:33 - 59 minutes - 54.6 MB

This one was a long time in the making. We tried a couple times over the last year to do a collab episode with Rob, Eric, and Amy from Jersey Beer Guys and a Girl Podcast but something always seemed to get in the way. No inside joke or speaking in code either, we literally just couldn't get our schedules to line up to do it. Since we were all in AC for the fest, we decided no better place than there and no better time than then to make it happen. We talk about beer in this one. We dissect t...

#109 AC Beer Fest Session 2 With a Little Help From Our Friends

April 21, 2019 07:33 - 1 hour - 93.7 MB

As we sat down to get started, we received a few texts from guests saying they couldn't make it on because they were too busy at their booths. So with zero game plan and zero scheduled guests, we cracked the mics and went for it. What happened next is basically a microcosm of how our podcast works. We ended up with a SLEW of guests from the beginning straight through to the end. If you didn't know better you'd think we planned this, but we did not. That's just how it all works and we're cool...

April 15, 2019 07:33 - 1 hour - 73.6 MB

Friday night session 1 at the AC Beer and Music Fest! Joe Turco from Sloop Brewing stops by and gives us the lowdown on Sloop. We crack one of his beers and discuss a Summer road trip up to the brewery to do a proper podcast with them. From there we discuss Richard's health (or lack there of) after a story emerges about an incident that happened during lunch earlier that day. Then our good friend Brad Forman from Great Lakes Brewing jumps on to show us their brand new American IPA as we try...

#107 Jon Henderson Founder of Good Time Tricycle Productions (Atlantic City Beer and Music Fest)

April 08, 2019 07:33 - 55 minutes - 50.7 MB

Jon Henderson is the President/Executive Producer/Founder of Good Time Tricycle Productions out of Atlantic City. 14 years ago Jon realized people were starting to seek out better beer, the people producing better beer were all united in a common "Us vs. Them" cause, and he wanted to unite all of those people under one roof. Atlantic City Beer Fest was born. Over the years the fest has evolved into what it is today, The Atlantic City Beer and Music Fest, which is currently the second larges...

#106 Mike Finoia at Tennessee Ave Beer Hall in Atlantic City

Mike Finoia is a stand-up comedian based in NYC, he's a writer for the show Impractical Jokers, and host of Amigos Podcast on the The Osiris Podcast Network. Mike was working at the Borgata in Atlantic City when Jay and Rob caught up with him at the Tennessee Ave Beer Hall for a few beers and a bite. Richard and Ryan weren't there for the recording of the episode but they recorded an intro and intermission later which we added to the show. We love hanging with Mike and doing the podcast whe...

#105 Love City Brewing, Take TWO!

March 14, 2019 07:33 - 1 hour - 104 MB

6 months ago we went to Love City Brewing in Philadelphia and recorded what we thought was one of our best podcast to date. Kevin, Melissa, and Mo from Love City were fantastic, it was a beautiful day, the beers were cold and amazing, and things could not have been more perfect. Or so we thought. As great as it was, we had an equipment issue and none of it was recorded. We were devastated and damn near shut the podcast down because of it. Fast forward 6 months and Love City was gracious enou...

#104 We Receive A Package In The Mail

March 08, 2019 08:33 - 1 hour - 57.1 MB

Love City Brewing in Philadelphia was our gracious host for 2 episodes. We did the first one with just us where we opened a brand new beer from Allagash called Sun Drift, an IPA from Oscar Blues called Can-O-Bliss, and a beer from Bear Republic Brewing called Sonoma Tart. Bear Republic sent us a package in the mail with stickers, a bottle opener, a press release, and two bottles of Sonoma Tart to drink on the podcast. Thanks Bear Republic! We also discuss the 30 year anniversary of the relea...

#103 Cully Naramore From Tree House Brewing

February 28, 2019 08:33 - 2 hours - 127 MB

Cully Narramore works on the canning line at Tree House Brewing. He drove down to NJ from CT to hang with us on the podcast, and hipped us to all things Tree House. These Tree House Beers stopped us in our tracks and basically left us speechless. Cully is a Phish fan and we managed to hip him to Tonewood Fuego as he was dropping Tree House heat on our heads. This one was fun for us because we always enjoy checking out hype beers from hype breweries. The Tree House hype is REAL. These beers t...

#102 Are These Three Fools Back At It Again?

February 21, 2019 08:33 - 1 hour - 75.4 MB

We should explain the title. It's a Beastie Boys reference. Name the song and the album for extra credit. Google might even be stumped by this, so you may have to rely on knowledge alone. We go deeeeep, good luck. This one is just the three of us (thus the title). We tangle with a few IPA's, battle a buzz created by phones instead of alcohol, and luxuriate in the laid back environment of the Tonewood Brewing glassware closet where this was recorded.
