Fat Girl Book Club

85 episodes - English - Latest episode: 12 months ago - ★★★★★ - 14 ratings

You know that bookclub you belong to? The one where the wine flows freely, the laughter is loud and the books are extremely interesting. That is this podcast, in your ears.
My name is Jennifer Radke and I am your host and a body image coach. I get my guests to read a book in the Fat Acceptance/Body Positive/Health at Every Size space and I talk to them about it.

Throughout these conversations I get them to tell their stories, we go off on tangents and we give you a great idea of the main concepts of the books we are discussing.
This is not the author talking about the book they wrote! This is people who are boudoir photographers, influencers, activists and other coaches, talking about life changing books.

Fat Sex by Rebecca Jane Weinstein with Lala

September 15, 2022 07:00 - 1 hour - 60.7 MB

TRIGGER WARNING: Event dieting, weight gain, sexual trauma, sex and graphic sexual acts, exercise I cannot believe we have reached episode 80!  After almost three years, a plethora of guests and experiences, and tons of books, we are at the end.  Well, not the end end, just the end for now.  I don't know why I am going on and on about this because I do hope to come back in the new year with a new look and possibly a new format, but for now I just want all of you to know how much it means to...

September 01, 2022 07:00 - 1 hour - 75.9 MB

TRIGGER WARNING: Use of the O-words   All good things must come to an end my friends.  This podcast has saved me in a multitude of ways.  The books I've read for the show, the people I've met have changed my life.  I am a different, a better person because I did this show.  I am also a more confident speaker and connector to others because I had a podcast. I just feel so grateful for the opportunity to run a show about something I love and connect to you, the listeners.  I am so, so gratef...

Fat on Film by Barbara Plotz with Haz Cady

August 18, 2022 07:00 - 1 hour - 73.5 MB

I've had a lot of chats on this podcast with people who've become friends after the show but rarely do I get to chat to a friend I had before getting them on the show (see my chat with Chavonne about Fierce Fattie or with Pascale about The Fat Lady Sings to see a couple I have done), but this episode is with a friend.  I met Haz Cady when my podcast was very new and we've had some great chats ever since (almost three years worth of chatting about books!).  This episode is basically an opport...

Big Girl by Kelsey Miller with Chelsea Levy

August 04, 2022 07:00 - 1 hour - 62.2 MB

I had Big Girl by Kelsey Miller on my TBR pile for a really long time.  I even sent out a note a few years (yes YEARS!) ago on social media looking for someone to read it with me, but I didn't get any takers so when Chelsea Levy mentioned this book as being a really important part of her journey to body liberation during an IG live a few months ago, I had to invite her on to discuss it with me and boy am I glad I did!  This book is so good.  I don't think there is a better memoir that covers...

Fat Girls in Black Bodies by Joy Arlene Renee Cox with Angel Austin

July 21, 2022 07:00 - 1 hour - 61.1 MB

I don't think I knew when Angel Austin of Sacred Space for Black Bodies asked to read Fat Girls in Black Bodies by Dr Joy Cox that it would be such a perfect match, but Angel and this book go hand-in-hand.  A big theme of this book is building community and Angel has incredible community building projects on the go, including mutual aid resources, a fat resource directory and sacred space, which is a vision of such proportions that you will have to listen to Angel's own words to understand h...

Gendered Bodies and Public Scrutiny by Victoria Kannen with Layla Cameron

July 07, 2022 07:00 - 1 hour - 75.3 MB

This is the second of two episodes on Gendered Bodies and Public Scrutiny by Victoria Kannen.  This time though I chatted with Layla Cameron, a fat activist based close to my hometown in Vancouver, BC, Canada.  You definitely do not have to listen to the first episode to get something out of this conversation but the first conversation provides a framework of the book and of this discussion.  We cover a lot of ground including: Layla's journey to becoming a fat activist Changes Layla has s...

Gendered Bodies and Public Scrutiny by Victoria Kannen with Victoria Kannen

June 23, 2022 07:00 - 1 hour - 56.3 MB

This week on the pod we are doing another round of a book deep dive.  In the episode released tomorrow I will be chatting to Victoria Kannen about her book called Gendered Bodies and Public Scrutiny.  In two weeks, I'll be chatting to a fat activist about the same book for extra insights and powerful takeaways.  In this discussion Victoria and I set up the framework of how our body stories are constructed.  Here are some of the highlights of our discussion: Who is Victoria Kannen and what i...

Fat Girl Walking by Brittany Gibbons with Katie Winnen

June 09, 2022 07:00 - 1 hour - 71 MB

I am so excited for you to listen to this week's episode.  I stumbled across Katie Winnen's podcast by chance and heard a genuine joyfulness in her voice.  I invited her on my pod and was so happy to find out that she is authentically joyful.  I mean, I really wish I lived closer to her because I have a feeling I would be trying to hang out on patios constantly with this woman.  She is just real and authentic.  It was an absolute pleasure getting to know her.  Here are some of the highlights...

Fierce Fattie by Vinny Welsby with Chavonne McClay

May 26, 2022 07:00 - 1 hour - 56.5 MB

TRIGGER WARNINGS: Abuse, O-word, biohacking and my disordered body building behaviours, derogatory use of the word, "fat" This week on the podcast I have a chat with my friend Chavonne about Vinny Welsby's book, Fierce Fattie.  I did something I rarely do and just had a chat with my friend, no discussion questions, no intense preparation, just a good old-fashion chin wag!  We laughed, we got reflective and hopefully we provided you with things to think about.   In this conversation I chat ...

Alternatives to Health at Every Size

April 28, 2022 07:00 - 58 minutes - 53.8 MB

TRIGGER WARNINGS GALORE: Intentional weight loss, disordered eating, disordered exercise, before/after photo discussion, eating disorders This is a solo episode where I chat about my history with the books Health at Every Size by Lindo Bacon and The F*ck It Diet by Caroline Dooner.  I also talk about why I've harmed others when I've talked about these books and what I am going to do going forward.   I also give you a big ol' list of books that are all good alternatives to individual behavi...

The Fat Lady Sings by Cheryl Fuller with Cheryl Fuller and Pascale Jenkins

April 14, 2022 07:00 - 1 hour - 68.3 MB

I don't know why the thought never occurred to me.  But it didn't. If finding a doctor is hard because of the way diet culture has made us all fatphobes, why did I think finding a therapist would be any different?   But I never thought about it like that, until a friend told me about The Fat Lady Sings by Cheryl Fuller, which explores being a therapist in a larger body and finding a therapist in a larger body.  It got me thinking and the concepts of the book lingered.   So obviously I ask...

[REPOST] - Fat Activism by Charlotte Cooper with Cat Pausé

March 31, 2022 07:00 - 58 minutes - 53.6 MB

This week I am re-releasing this episode with Cat Pausé.  I didn't know her well, in fact we only met twice.  I was on her podcast Friend of Marilyn and she was on mine.  But her work was brilliant and I was so honoured to have her on the show.  She recently, vey suddenly passed away. I wanted to do something to show how amazing she was and how much of an impact she has had on me.  The fact she came onto my growing podcast and gave her limited time to a fledging fat liberationist is a true t...

13 Ways of Looking at a Fat Girl by Mona Awad with Serena Nangia

March 17, 2022 07:00 - 1 hour - 78.3 MB

In this conversation with Serena Nangia we get vulnerable.  I think part of the reason for that was this book, 13 Ways of Looking at a Fat Girl by Mona Awad, was personal and triggering.  Having said that, we both had really different perspectives because Serena never dieted and grew up in a household with someone who struggled with an eating disorder whereas, I had an eating disorder and spent a few years in a straight sized body.  Get ready for a powerful conversation where we cover: Sere...

Body of Truth by Harriet Brown with Dr. Lisa Folden

March 03, 2022 08:00 - 1 hour - 55.7 MB

I love book people.  If you talk the language of books, you and me, we'll get along and Dr. Lisa, she talked the language of books.  Her story into body liberation began with a book that was also my starting point and in this discussion we jump into Harriet Brown's Body of Truth.  We cover a lot of ground, including: Lisa's body liberation journey How she got away from using diet culture in her physiotherapy practice Why Lisa picked this book Harriet Brown's journey with her daughters an...

Unashamed by Leah Vernon with Jenn Jackson

February 17, 2022 08:00 - 1 hour - 75.2 MB

Oh boy is this discussion juicy!  You remember my chat with Chavonne McClay about Savala Nolan's book Don't Let It Get You Down?  Well, my guest this week is Chavonne's cohost on their podcast, Embodiment for the Rest of Us.  Meet Jenn Jackson!  I am delighted to be chatting to her about Leah Vernon's book Unashamed and boy do we dig deeply into the meaning of that word!  We also talk about a bunch of other things, including: Jenn's body justice and fat liberation journey Discussing emodim...

Into the Drowning Deep by Mira Grant with Destiny Dimattei

February 03, 2022 08:00 - 1 hour - 58.4 MB

I have something really different for you this week.  I know that recently we've had an episode that strayed off the path of body acceptance books but this is way, way off the path (we can barely see the path!).  This week I'm discussing a fictional book called Into the Drowning Deep by Mira Grant with a second time podcast guest, Destiny Dimattei.  I truly believe in the value of taking our body liberation lens and applying it to other books we read.  It insures integrity in our values and ...

Don't Let it Get You Down by Savala Nolan with Chavonne McClay

January 20, 2022 08:00 - 1 hour - 67.4 MB

Every year I pick my favourite books of the year in November.  I know I'm early into this year but I just know this book, Don't Let it Get You Down by Savala Nolan, is going to be on my list at the end of the year.  Three reasons why this book is so incredibly magnificent: Savala Nolan's story is powerful.  She is a mixed race woman who dives deep into her own intersections and how they have impacted her journey. Structurally this book is amazing.  Each essay takes the reader through Saval...

Decolonizing Wellness by Dalia Kinsey with Dalia Kinsey

January 06, 2022 08:00 - 1 hour - 73.1 MB

TRIGGER WARNING: This episode is a really heavy discussion about discrimination and racism.  Please take your self-care into account and skip this episode if necessary.  I promise I won't be offended.   If you've been a long time listener you know I don't have authors on the show (or at least it is really rare), but I've made a big exception in this case because of the topic matter.  Dalia Kinsey's book is written specifically for the QTBIPOC community.  It discusses the marginalization and...

Killer Fat by Natalie Boero with Kimberly Dark

December 23, 2021 08:00 - 1 hour - 56.9 MB

Another first on the podcast!  A few months ago, I had Natalie Boero on the show to talk about Kimberly Dark's book Fat, Pretty and Soon to Be Old. This week I have such a treat!  Kimberly Dark is came on the show to talk about Natalie Boero's book Killer Fat!  I had such a ball and honestly the two episodes really compliment one another.  Some of the things we chatted about include:  Kimberly's journey "I live in the circus sideshow of sociology" Moving from fat/fit to fat/disabled Why ...

The Hundred Year Diet by Susan Yager with Emily Lubin

December 09, 2021 08:00 - 1 hour - 72 MB

I have never thrown out my questions when talking to a guest before, but I just had so much fun talking to Emily Lubin about The Hundred Year Diet by Susan Yager that I lost track of time and didn't ask anything I'd planned to!  This book also provided us with lots to discuss.  The 100 Year Diet was really problematic and triggering, so we were able to dive deep into some pretty nuanced discussion.  Here are some of the things we talked about: Emily's anti-diet journey Dieting and children...

The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho with Adrienne Bennett

November 25, 2021 08:00 - 1 hour - 62.4 MB

If you head over to Adrienne Bennett's IG account, you will see why I had to have this woman on the show.  I'm not one for woo woo, but this woman shines.  She is highly radiant and all I wanted is for some of that to rub off on me.  When I reached out to her though, she said she doesn't read too much in the body acceptance space, which is interesting because her account is all about connection to the body.  I asked what she does read and she pointed me to this book.  I cannot wait for you t...

Cultish by Amanda Montell with Amanda Scriver

October 28, 2021 07:00 - 1 hour - 65.4 MB

The guest on this week's show is a repeat guest.  I did a wonderful roundtable chat with a bunch of the authors from Big: stories about life in plus-sized bodies and Amanda was one of them.  I started listening to her podcast and she had the author of Cultish: the language of fanaticism  on her show and it just felt so connected to diet culture, so of course I had to have it on the show.  During this conversation, Amanda and I talked about: Are audio books real books? Amanda's body accepta...

I am going to be gushing about this one for a long time!!!
