178: It's melting! | Kuffs (1992)

March 26, 2024 07:00 - 1 hour - 67.2 MB

What is it about Christian Slater? He has the charm to basically almost carry anything. Well, Kuffs is a little known action comedy from 1992 that only really survives because of the magic of our lead character. Charles picked this one and it was a light refresher into why the 90s had such a diverse group of film genres.  We talk about the unexpected fashion we loved, just wonder what the hell this script was about, and take a look at the recent work of Slater and why this movie would have ...

177: Girl car? What kind of girl drives a Hemi 'Cuda? | Gone in 60 Seconds (2000)

March 17, 2024 07:00 - 1 hour - 75.2 MB

Vroom! I’m here on another solo adventure to talk about one of my foundational films, Gone in 60 Seconds. For me this movie had it all. An incredible cast, LA streets, and the CARS! For this episode I talk about my own history with loving cars, Angelina Jolie as Sway being the blueprint, and why Nic Cage will always reign supreme. Off-topic rants: my thoughts on the recent Crow trailer, comparisons to The Fast and The Furious, nu-metal and the importance of a driving soundtrack  🏎️ --- ...

Deep Cut: Nip/Tuck Pilot (2003) [Patreon Preview]

March 10, 2024 11:00 - 20 minutes - 19.1 MB

for the full episode join the Patreon [patreon.com/fashiongrunge] Well, welcome to the circus. Or otherwise known as one of the darkest, most fucked up, brilliant show from the early 00s called Nip/Tuck. At first anything around surgery was like a definite no but in college I got sucked in. Me and Mikey are suckers for shows like this and loved going back to just the pilot episode. We try to keep it pretty spoiler free in case you haven't seen the show but OMG. We get into Kimber's introdu...

Transmission Notes: Love Is Blind, Willy Wonka Experience, Coachella lineup, Music biz thoughts and more!

March 01, 2024 12:00 - 1 hour - 79.2 MB

OK, this was super chaotic and me and Jules basically went rogue and talked about random topics for over an hour... We get into our current Love is Blind thoughts, the memes of the Willy Wonka Experience, create our own internet family (Daddy, Mother, and babygirl), and we get into the weeds of Hollywood and the current state of the heartthrob actor. 0:00- 25:00 Love Is Blind talk Mentions:  Doja Cat at the VMAs : https://youtu.be/7WRZviRMYXA?si=tCrNGDB92Mmw89su Gwen Stefani- Luxurious ...

Forward Flash 034: Hey, there's something down here... | The Descent (2005) [Patreon Preview}

February 25, 2024 12:00 - 22 minutes - 20.3 MB

for the full episode join the Patreon [patreon.com/fashiongrunge] This is the perfect example of 'never leave the house' and 'don't go descenting into unknown cave systems'. I wasn't sure what film to do so again I asked Charles for another suggestion. I have no idea what I did to deserve this because I literally sat cowering in fear in broad daylight watching this. Not only did it build masterful tension and take me on a journey I couldn't expect, but it broke barriers with an all female c...

176: Maybe the next one, darling. | Crash (1996)

February 18, 2024 12:00 - 1 hour - 76.2 MB

Finally I've stepped into the world of David Cronenberg films. It really is fitting that the first one I see and review is Crash from 1996. It was both me and Charles' first watch and we were enthralled. The exploration of subcultures I always find fascinating and this certain was that. We talk about the physical reactions to car crashes, how James Spader is THAT one, and constantly remind you that it's not the same film as that abomination that won Best Picture in 2004.    off-topic rants...

175: Congratulations, you've discovered life beyond MTV. | Girl (1998)

February 11, 2024 12:00 - 1 hour - 73.9 MB

This was a first watch for both me and Jules. Objectively it's no Oscar winner but when you see it for what it is, there was something there. The casting was incredible and Tara Reid basically stole the show.  We get into the realistic fashion, so many quotes we loved, a real-time deep dive on the director (eek), and just how this story was unbelievable and infuriating at times. Off-topic rants include: ghost rom-com casting, 'losing your V card' as a movie genre, our first musician crushe...

You, Me and 5 Bucks 014: A chat w/ Old Millennials Podcast

February 06, 2024 12:00 - 1 hour - 101 MB

What a wild ride! I get to unlock the side of my reality tv brain and have a chat with Emilie and Margaux of Old Millennials Podcast about our history with the genre.  I can't even begin to tell you everything we talked about but lets just say we talked about Tyra Banks fainting on ANTM, fashion adjacent reality shows, MTV reality that raised us, Bravo a plenty, including our thoughts on the new Vanderpump Rules season, and soo much more! --- Get BONUS episodes on 90s TV and culture (Frea...

Back Track 012: Amity is a summer town, we need summer dollars! | Jaws (1975) [Patreon Preview]

February 04, 2024 20:13 - 20 minutes - 19 MB

for the full episode join the Patreon [patreon.com/fashiongrunge] --- What says July 4th other than shark attacks and no holds barred capitalism?  That's right we're talking Jaws from 1975! I have never seen this movie (can you believe it?) so Charles suggested it for July 4th this year!  I loved this movie for so many reasons but basically the willingness of these townspeople to ignore warnings of a Great White shark that has killed multiple people at this very beach is alarming. We get...

174: Behind the Music Videos | Volume 1

January 28, 2024 12:00 - 1 hour - 77.3 MB

The time has come. I finally recorded an episode on my own. A first time here on the show. It was hard deciding although I did do an internet poll and  'top music videos of the 90s' won.  This took me a while to get in the mood to do but I selected these videos not really as random but as a good representation of all these varying types of narratives that I loved in videos during my teenage years. I did some behind the scenes research and cruised some message boards to dig deeper. I basical...

Forward Flash 033: Jake Donnelly, please report to the nurses station. | Swimfan (2002) w/ @lovefool.99 [Patreon Preview]

I'm joined by Samantha of the nostalgia account Lovefool.99 on IG! This was such a blast to deconstruct an early 2000s classic.  Swim along with us as we try to make sense of this literal insane story, the weird acting, and the questionable fashion choices. You, Me and 5 Bucks 013: A chat w/ Black Girl Film Club

January 17, 2024 12:00 - 1 hour - 99.4 MB

And we're back with another interview episode! I did promise I would do more of these this year and what a better way to start than to chat to Ashley and Britney of Black Girl Film Club Podcast! As per usual we were all over the place when it comes to the topics we covered.  The way we analyze films these days is always so interesting to me. We touch on how the discovery and reviewing of films has changed in the age of social media.  We get into what new films we're looking forward to, our ...

173: I'm not going back. | Born Into Exile (1997)

January 14, 2024 12:00 - 1 hour - 65.1 MB

Some considerable time has passed since we last explored the 'movie of the week' genre on the podcast. Luckily, if we ever run out of 90s films to talk about, there are literally thousands to pull from. This is one that has really stuck with me since I was a teenager. I remember taping this from tv and cutting the commercials out so I could watch it back uninterrupted. Out of all of the films, this particular one I watched ALL the time.  I got Charles on this episode who knew nothing about ...

172: If you wanna smoke, you can smoke in the trunk. | Excess Baggage (1997)

January 07, 2024 12:00 - 1 hour - 61.2 MB

What a way to welcome the New Year. Excess Baggage is a film from 1997 that almost takes you there but then falls short overall. The casting honestly saved this whole project but it really puts into perspective the importance of a tight story and seamless collaboration.  This film was riddled with re-writes and re-shoots which is typically not a good sign, however watching for the charm and nostalgia factor really made up for it. Me and Mikey spent this episode pointing out the story holes,...

Back Track 011: That's not the Northern Lights, that's Manderley! | Rebecca (1940) [Patreon Preview]

January 05, 2024 17:49 - 20 minutes - 19 MB

My Mom showed this to me when I was about 10 and thank goodness because my bar for cinema was set pretty high from the jump.  This is one of me and Charles' all time favorite films and we have been quoting it in real life for years so it's high time we review it proper. We get into the behind the scenes drama with Hitchcock and the producer Selz...

BONUS: Oh we burning...Saltburn (2023) [Patreon Unlocked] 🧂🔥

December 29, 2023 12:00 - 1 hour - 57.1 MB

Well, we're here. Yes I had to talk about Saltburn, the recent release by Emerald Fennell. I can't remember a time where I've seen a film twice in the theater within a week. There was just something that grabbed me from the first trailer viewing that I knew I had to see this on the big screen.  Because I haven't shut up about it over the past three weeks I had to enlist both Charles and Mikey that I saw it with on two different occasions for this special episode. We talk about some crazy st...

171: This is my house. I have to defend it. | Home Alone (1990) 🎄

December 24, 2023 12:00 - 1 hour - 66.9 MB

It's not officially the Christmas season without a rewatch of the 90s classic, Home Alone. I have some residual trauma around this film from when I was kid and I only now as an adult really see the true chaotic and terrifying nature of it all.  Me and Mikey talk the memories of our youth we have with the film, how Macaulay CARRIED, and basically want to call child services on the worst family imaginable.  Off-topic rants include:  the Cher Christmas album, Buzz being Sid from Toy Story, an...

170: This dress is dry clean only Melanie! | Spice World (1997)

December 17, 2023 12:00 - 1 hour - 79.7 MB

Girl Power! No, really!  You know we couldn't talk about the 90s without mentioning the glue that held us all together, the Spice Girls. I finally have Mikey and Jules on a podcast together to talk about our favorite girl group from across the pond.  We basically spend sooo much time reliving our childhoods, the countless FASHION moments, and how the critics got this whole premise too wrong.  off topic rants include: AbFab, Madonna, Josie and the Pussycats, and Elon Musk conspiracy theori...

169: So much for the first coma. | Reversal of Fortune (1990)

December 10, 2023 12:00 - 1 hour - 79.6 MB

In keeping with our 'domestic drama' theme we wandered into by accident, we're talking Reversal of Fortune from 1990. Based on the true story and legal case of Claus von Bülow told through the eyes of his lawyer Alan Dershowitz. This was Charles' pick and from my  glance of this trailer I thought I was in for an erotic thriller of epic proportions but turns out it was a legal drama of all legal dramas. Although, anything with Jeremy Irons and Glenn Close is immediately intriguing. At this po...

for the full episode join the Patreon [patreon.com/fashiongrunge] -- There are times when I think about the films and directors that shaped me in my teenage years.  Back in the 90s I could have never imagined connecting with anyone outside of my own friend group who liked the same weird movies and things I did. Now, because of this magical place called the internet it's easy to find people from all corners of the world and generations with shared interests. This brings me to the latest in...

168: Libbets? What sort of a name is Libbets? | The Ice Storm (1997)

November 26, 2023 12:00 - 1 hour - 55.9 MB

Better late than never. It's still the weekend of the Thanksgiving holiday so here is another holiday themed film that fits the bill. I have heard of this one but it's a first time watch for me. The cast was an immediate draw that made me so amped to finally review.  Me and Charles talked about how we loved the 70s fashion, question how this wasn't nominated for any Oscars, and basically talk other films in the 'domestic drama' category  Off-topic rants include: Oscars/Award show facts, an...

167: Danger is my middle name. | Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery (1997)

November 19, 2023 12:00 - 1 hour - 82.1 MB

Groovy baby, yeah!  Yes, even I can't believe there are movies that we haven't talked about yet and we're over 150 episodes in. This is another example of just that. Austin Powers is a comfort film for me that I didn't' realize until I started this review. The soundtrack has been burned into my brain for years as I used to play it to fall asleep throughout my mid teens.  Me and Mikey reviewed this one and it was laughs all the way through! We get into the hilarious moments, LOTS of behind ...

🎀 BONUS: Thoughts on Sofia Coppola's Priscilla (2023)

November 10, 2023 20:23 - 1 hour - 68.7 MB

It's first for the podcast! On this special bonus edition me and Jules are giving our thoughts on the new Sofia Coppola film, Priscilla that just premiered last week. We were instantly enthralled by the amazing visuals and world that Sofia creates around her characters so well.  There is no format for this one so enjoy this random chat covering the film, the Lana Del Rey of it all, how we're so intrigued by Priscilla, Elvis being a weirdo, and more!  🎶 We made a special old timey playlist ...

Back Track 010: I felt so much, that I started to feel nothing. | Christiane F. (1981) [Patreon Preview]

November 05, 2023 12:00 - 22 minutes - 20.8 MB

for the full episode join the Patreon [patreon.com/fashiongrunge] This film has been on my list for a while but it slipped my memory as of late. It popped into my head and I was sure that Jai would be up to do an episode on it.  Much to my surprise this was her first time watching and this was probably my second or third watch. This film is an incredible true story of a 13 year old girl Christiane F. taking place in mid 70s West Berlin.  I was so focused on the performances and depictions...

166: Midnight margaritas! | Practical Magic (1998)

October 31, 2023 11:00 - 1 hour - 69.3 MB

What a cute little movie! A great way to end off this October season and a perfect vibe for this Halloween! This is my first time watching this one and although I feel like I've seen it through film stills on Tumblr already. Nothing could have prepared me for how I want to LIVE inside of this movie. In the house, garden, and especially with the coolest Aunts in the galaxy.  Me and Mikey covered this one and even though he's seen it multiple times, it's still every bit as exciting. Our only ...

165: If I let you go, do you think that you can fly? | The Good Son (1993)

October 22, 2023 11:00 - 1 hour - 67.7 MB

This is another one of those films I'm surprised we haven't covered until now. I have faint memories of watching this in a 90s basement during a sleepover as a kid but it's definitely been a while since I've watched as an adult. Luckily Jules had never heard of this one and we get her first time watch thoughts.  We both talk about how the two primary characters, Macaulay Culkin and Elijah Wood were acting their hearts out in this, the normie 90s fashion and nod to Tonya Harding, and the WIL...

Forward Flash 032: Truth is cool but unattainable... | Y Tu Mamá También (2001) [Patreon Preview]

October 19, 2023 16:57 - 25 minutes - 23.2 MB

for the full episode join the Patreon [patreon.com/fashiongrunge] It's been a while since we've reviewed a film after 2000. Y Tu Mamá También has been on my list and it's the perfect film for this summer heat and the spirit of adventure and exploration.  Me and Jai had a great time diving into this world that neither one of us have visited in quite a while. Directed by Alfonso Cuarón who takes you on a short but fulfilling journey that leaves you questioning and reminiscing about your own ...

164: I'm your number one fan. | Misery (1990)

October 15, 2023 11:00 - 1 hour - 83.6 MB

I have to say that Misery has been on my list to watch and review for a minute. This really is the perfect film for the October season. A winter cabin, cozy decor, and a seemingly Good Samaritan  who turns out to be a...let's just say "over zealous fan".  Charles was in the throws of a Kathy Bates era in the 90s and this is essentially my first watch. We get into the practical winter fashion, the Sheriff and Deputy wife stealing scenes, changes from the novel to screen, and the long list of...

163: They won't be back... I don't think they like me. | Fire in the Sky (1993)

October 08, 2023 11:00 - 58 minutes - 53.2 MB

Well it's October season and we're here to bring the thrills and chills. Charles picked this one and by about 20 mins in I was terrified. The concept of any type of abduction is terrifying, alien or not. While this was released in '93, its based on a true story that happened in the 70s.  We had a time chatting this movie including the male logging thirst trap montage early on, the fashion choices, and why you should never leave the house or get out of a car to investigate a strange hovering...

Fashion Chat: Spring/ Summer 2024 Runway Recap!

October 04, 2023 11:00 - 1 hour - 108 MB

Since everyone loves our chat episodes, me and Jai talk another hectic fashion month season. Neither one of us are too crazy about spring fashion in general, but we did talk about our favorite (and not so fave) collections for a whole 2 hours.  We break it down by cities: New York, London, Milan, and finally Paris. Some of the brands we talk are: Proenza Schouler, Gucci, JW Anderson, Sacai, Prada, and much more!  🖤 Enjoy! ---  Get BONUS episodes on 90s TV and culture (Freaks & Geeks, My ...

162: Ya, I'm always like this. | Boys (1996)

October 01, 2023 11:00 - 57 minutes - 52.8 MB

Another classic example in the 90s of studio interference that ruined what could have been a standout film. With a great cast and a disappointing story trajectory, we were left wanting wayyy more at the end of this.  Me and Jai only watched for Queen Winona. Granted, she tried to carry this film but ultimately the script was lacking and she dine have much help in terms of a strong actor in the lead role. Instead of not reviewing it we did get into what we would change, things that would hav...

161: You're a smooth smoothie, you know? | Fargo (1996)

September 17, 2023 11:00 - 1 hour - 77.4 MB

Here we are. Another classic film of the 90s that I am just watching for the first time. I'm not as familiar with the Coen Brother's work so this is a newer genre for me. I've heard so much about Fargo for years and I'm soo glad that I've finally watched it. Me and Charles take a deep dive and basically rave about how much we love Frances McNormand.  There are so many quotable moments that we try to dramatically act out, I realize that I have a massive crush on Steve Buscemi, and now we wan...

Fashion Chat: Peter Do at Helmut Lang, the Tabi swiper, changes at Supreme, the future of i-D

September 10, 2023 11:00 - 1 hour - 71 MB

It's been a while since me and Jai recorded a proper fashion chat episode. We talk on the phone all the time about what's going on in fashion and there were some things before our FW collection review that I wanted to touch on.  We start out talking our underwhelming feelings on the new Helmut Lang collection, Tremaine Emory leaving Supreme, my recent print magazine purchases, Karlie Kloss possibly buying i-D , the Tabi swiper, new TikTok creator discoveries, and some other random bits Thi...

160: Shouldn't you be with your jock itch friends? | Devil in the Flesh (1998)

September 03, 2023 11:00 - 56 minutes - 51.4 MB

If you're looking for a seedy, movie of the week type film that almost takes you there but not quite...look to Devil in the Flesh from 1998. I had seen some of the stills one night on Tumblr, and I enlisted Mikey to chat about our first time thoughts.  We touch on what the story needed to push further, the accurate fashion, and why a kicking soundtrack could have really saved this film.  Off-topic rants: I got Mikey into Vanderpump Rules and we chat about it from about 27:00-40:00 ---  G...

159: She's not the type of girl you stop seeing. | Final Analysis (1992)

August 27, 2023 11:00 - 1 hour - 76.4 MB

Well, in this film we didn't get a Final Analysis but boy did we get a whiplash of a story. Based on the movie poster I thought I was getting this racy erotic thriller and while we kinda did, we ended up getting baited and switched in a good way.  Me and Charles had a good first time watch with some surprising results. The fashion, the film noir structure, and the nod to Hitchcock we definitely noticed.  Off-topic rants include: 60 Days In, fav movie of the weeks from the 90210 casts durin...

158: Do you ever get the feeling you're being watched? | Stealing Beauty (1996)

August 13, 2023 11:00 - 1 hour - 76.3 MB

Imagine a wanderlust summer  in a sun drenched villa on the hill in Tuscany. That's where this film takes us in a perfect summer film. This being Liv Tyler's first starring role is insane because she floats through this whole film like the beautiful dream that she is.  Me and Jai took a walk down memory lane with our own similar stories of unforgettable summers away from home. We didn't find out a lot in terms of behind the scenes, but we do touch on the questionable history of the director...

157: Is everyone in this town on drugs? | U-Turn (1997)

July 30, 2023 11:00 - 1 hour - 56 MB

Ok, so for this one I took a chance and found a film that both me and Mikey haven't seen before. I vividly remember seeing tv spots during the 1997 MTV VMAs. The casting immediately was my draw, that and being directed by Oliver Stone. Well, suffice to say that we were underwhelmed with this script in particular. The beautiful cinematography by Robert Richardson was particularly striking despite the lacking story.  We did find something to talk about like the amazing desert fashion, interes...

The new millennium was an interesting time in so many ways. 156: RED LIGHT, GREEN LIGHT! | Mission: Impossible (1996)

July 16, 2023 11:00 - 1 hour - 74.4 MB

What are you even doing with your life if you aren't jumping out of a plane or off the side of a building at 60 being a literal spy?  Since it's Mission: Impossible season it was only right to review the one that started it all, the 1996 chapter. As children of the 80s both me and Jai are super familiar with Tom Cruise as an entity and every year he seems to ratchet up our collective blood pressure with each installment in the franchise. We both remember seeing this film back in the day an...

155: You don't gallop off into the sunset with a dinosaur without causing a stir! | Tammy and the T-Rex (1994)

July 09, 2023 14:52 - 50 minutes - 46.3 MB

*this episode first appeared on Patreon It's honestly a travesty that me, a self proclaimed 90s enthusiast and Charles, Dino expert didn't know this film existed until a few weeks ago.  I was instantly lured in by Paul Walker in a crop top but stayed for the sorta sweet and completely zany story with an incredible wardrobe. 154: It's only love. What's everyone so scared of? | Get Real (1998)

July 02, 2023 11:00 - 1 hour - 65.1 MB

We decided to take one last dust off the indie film batch for the end/beginning of the month. Here's yet another film that I've never heard anyone mention, Get Real (1998). This was both me and Mikey's second time viewing it since the 90s and what a delight it was to watch.  We get into Mikey's history with the film and seeing it in the cinema, do a recast with our own current casting, and talk about the many quotes we loved that flew under the radar.  *there are a lot of random off-topic ...

Deep Cut: William Shakespeare's Romeo + Juliet (1996) [Remix Edition]

June 25, 2023 11:00 - 1 hour - 81.1 MB

It was beyond time to revisit this film that was part of my formative years. We first covered this film early in the podcast days and during the pandemic. There wasn't a clear format back then so any opportunity I have to talk about how much this film means to me is warranted. On this episode we use our regular format with reviews and me and Jai get a new look through Jules' eyes who was seeing it for the first time.  We get into the chokehold Leo had on us in the 90s, the INCREDIBLE castin...

153: He's kind of like a male Kate Moss. | Billy's Hollywood Screen Kiss (1998)

June 18, 2023 11:00 - 1 hour - 75.1 MB

Well, it's time to dust off the old movie vault for this one. I put up a poll on IG to see if anyone has heard or even seen this film and it was a mystery to most. Now, this film I first saw ages ago at Mikey's house and seeing it again all these years later just brought me such delight.  This quirky indie rom com stars Sean Hayes before he was known as Jack from Will and Grace. He's a Polaroid (ahh!) photographer who falls in love with a cute coffee barista boy (how 90s) who is a perfect f...

June 13, 2023 11:00 - 1 hour - 65.7 MB

This was a somber episode. Leaving Las Vegas has been on my list to watch for so long and I just had to be in a certain mood. Turns out this was that time. I had long heard of this performance that won Nicolas Cage his Lead Actor Oscar in 1995 but I never expected to be hit this emotionally hard by a film.  Me and Charles talk the cinematography and the different side of Vegas, how Nic Cage prepared for a role like this, Elisabeth Shue's fashion, and some interesting behind the scenes bits....

151: I'll see you in your dreams. | Queer as Folk (US): Pilot (2000)

June 06, 2023 13:31 - 1 hour - 83.4 MB

It's Pride month and what better to kick it off than talking one of me and Mikey's favorite shows from our high school days, Queer as Folk!  While this is the US version that premiered on Showtime, we had never seen anything like this and that's possibly why it has stayed with us over 20 years later. This is based on the UK series which was much shorter, however this version has some incredible characters that you just can't help but fall in love with.  For a trip down memory lane we are d...
