We’re jetting towards the celebration of our nation’s independence this week on Fabulous Film and Friends we’ve decided to discuss and dissect the film that started it all, 1986’s Top Gun starring Tom Cruise, Kelly McGillis, Anthony Edwards, Meg Ryan, Val Kilmer, Tom Skerrit, Rick Rossovich, James Tolkan, John Stockwell and Tim Robbins.

I’m your host Gino Caputi and joining me this week are series regulars Roseanne Caputi, Dr. David Johnson DMD and everybody’s favorite newshound Mark Nicholas Workhoven.

And now the synopsis.

Lt. Pete “Maverick” Mitchell is a hotshot Navy Pilot whose devil may care attitude and boundary pushing flying style earns him a spot at The Naval Fighter Weapons School known as Top Gun. Along with his best friend Lt. JG Nick “Goose” Bradshaw, the pair cavort around the Naval school going to bars, playing volleyball, taking a lot of showers and proving what cocky bastards they are to both rival  LT. Tom “Iceman” Kazansky and civilian flight instructor Charlotte “callsign Charlie” Blackwood.

After prerequisite flirting, Maverick and Charlie become romantically involved and all is well until one day, while flying in a training exercise, Maverick’s plane gets caught in Iceman’s Jet wash, the engines fail, the jet goes into a flat spin and Goose is killed while ejecting  the aircraft.

Maverick’s confidence is shot and he contemplates quitting the program but his commanding officer Mike “Viper” Metcalf convinces him to stay. Then on graduation day Maverick and all the top gun grads are called into a mission to fight what looks to be the Russians in a head to head aerial dogfight over the Indian Ocean and against all odds, Maverick saves the day and shoots all the enemy aircraft down. Maverick and Iceman land their planes safely having put aside their rivalry, and finally when Maverick goes home, Charlie waits for him at the bar where they met.

Okay, let’s address the elephant in the room: What’s the deal with all the sweat and shower scenes? And overly made up Kelly McGillis?

What's the deal with this movie?
