Something different today…I came across a fascinating woman who was, like me, visiting Marrakech. We struck up conversation as women do, one of those instant connections. Hannah, now retired, is a linguist, was journalist, Sunday Times magazine editor and more and chose to talk about the soul journey she is on: examining as deeply as she can her whiteness. Lots of food for thought and awareness raising about amongst other things, unconscious bias and undeserved rights…Join us and I would love this to be the start of a meaningful conversation…

BIO
Linguist, journalist, editor [Sunday Times magazine], multimedia publisher, digital explorer, I have specialised in branding as a way of changing how we do business.

Using my decades of experience across different industries, I’m now taking time to step back and look at the bigger picture. I signed up to a part-time MA in Culture, Diaspora and Ethnicity, am taking part in anti-racist training and am writing about women change-makers, relating to our contemporary uncertainty, divisiveness and confusion. And I take a lot of pleasure in being an active grandparent.

RECOMMENDATIONS
Nova Reid
Nova Reid is an exceptional British woman committed to helping people transform how they think and act. Her work is beautifully accessible and enormously helpful and insightful. One good starting point would be her book ‘The Good Ally’ which guides you through all the different aspects of whiteness and anti-racism.She also offers courses which are all done in your own time and online – it’s a big investment and commitment and one which you can consider once you have worked your way through her book.

Peggy McIntosh
I would also recommend an older American anti racism educator called Peggy McIntosh who gave a Ted talk on the line of equal justice and existing above and below it.  https://www.ted.com/talks/peggy_mcintosh_how_to_recognize_your_white_privilege_and_use_it_to_fight_inequality?language=en

She also wrote a paper on White Privilege: unpacking the invisible knapsack which has some very good examples of the types of behaviour when we assume white privilege:

A class divided
And just to understand how long change takes after over 400 years of white dominance, I’d like to recommend an unusual documentary from 1985 that showed how, following the assassination of Martin Luther King, a teacher called Jane Elliott in a small, all-white town in Iowa, gave her third-grade children a lesson in discrimination and the effect on those children years later. https://www.pbs.org/wgbh/frontline/documentary/class-divided/
