In this iTunes episode your hosts Stevesmi and Da Mobster have a look at the 1982 Mr Olympia Chris Dickerson. In light of his recent passing we go back and have another look at him and his career:
• His background in opera and drama and how that got him into bodybuilding
• How it also gave him a presence on stage
• Being the first Afro-American (Black) Mr O (82 in London. He was aged 43). Also, like Dexter Jackson, competing in the masters Olympia (1994)
• Competed 40+ times over three decades
• Buddy of and coached by Bill Pearl (famed for 5am workouts)
• Dignity at the 1980 and 1981 comps when others refused to compete again with Franco or Arnold
• Being gay (openly according to wiki) as well as dealing with issues being Afro-American
• One of triplets - the other two passing some time before him and whether his healthy life-style helped
• Check out his 1981 season. Places 2nd at the Olympia and then pretty much wins (5x) or places 2nd (2x) of 7 Grand Prix events
• His positive upbringing and being kept away from trouble when colleges weren’t even letting Afro-Americans study.
• Death age 82 of heart failure – some years after his brothers (triplets)
• How all this means he deserves far more recognition as one of the greats
