THE JAZZ IN ME marks the return to original jazz music by producer, keyboardist, and songwriter Eric Copeland. After releasing albums of his own in the 90's, including the funky, synth jazz "Cooler" and the seminal, laid back "Stolen Moments", Copeland began producing albums for national and international artists full-time. In the past few years though, Copeland began retooling some older songs he had written for other artists (My Steps Are Ordered, Come to Me), new takes on classic hymns (Softly and Tenderly, Just As I Am), polishing up a few he had previously released (Have Thine Own Way), and writing new tunes that defined his current place in life (In Between Dreams, On the Side). The result is THE JAZZ IN ME.

My Artist Side

May 27, 2015 06:10

As I start to explore my writing more than ever these days, it made me think about the differences between making music, and writing fiction or nonfiction. (I will for the moment leave out producing music of others, which of course is much of the job of my Creative Soul companies. That's work, and the purpose here is talking about personal creating.) I got to thinking the other day about why it seems so much more freeing writing fiction and nonfiction than making new music of my own. I hav...

Why I Lead

September 23, 2013 06:29

People ask me from time to time if I look for talent. They ask if I ever approach artists who I find interesting and ask to work with them. They wonder if I make “back-end” deals with artists to make sure I get a piece of the action once they get going. Eric with Pedro Simoes And to each of these I answer, absolutely not. They look at me quizzically, wondering why in the wide world of sports would I ignore the way it’s been done in the music business for the past century? It’s lunacy! Don...

How I Started My Next Life (And Became a Music Business Zombie)

July 22, 2013 05:56

I am a music industry zombie. I am one of the teeming masses of independent music people who have invaded the music industry and began turning them into people like me. How I Became a Zombie When I dreamed of how I would find my Next Life, I was working a regular corporate job and doing music on the side. I had been a professional musician for several decades by this point, but the thought of trying to support my family in music was scary and seemed impossible. The only people I knew that...

A Conversation with Music Producer Eric Copeland

January 02, 2013 06:58

From a recent interview with MACKIE, a Christian Entertainment News Magazine.  MACKIE:  How Long have you been involved in the entertainment business? EC:   Well, I used to go to dances my father played when I was a kid and watch his band. Also, I was in church choirs and marching bands that traveled extensively as a teen. But I have been doing gigs professionally (both live and studio) since I was 18. In my early 20s I lived in Chicago and worked in several bands and with vocalists, but ...

Good News, Bad News, Interesting News

August 03, 2012 15:35

I was surprised to learn a recent music brand of mine had apparently made more money than I spent on it. So, that's the good news. Yay... The bad news is that it took a year and a half to get to this point. The return was through product sales, downloads, royalties, and live appearances and sales. The interesting news is that in research from CDBaby (which also collects all monies from iTunes, Amazon, etc), digital sales (meaning downloads) made up almost 60% of the sales. Meaning for t...

The Ones God Brings Me

June 11, 2012 08:03

Often times my wife inspires great blog ideas. She doesn't do it on purpose, and generally would prefer not to be the named culprit of any epiphany I have. But it happens... And it happened today. We watched a recent movie with Steve Martin and Jack Black where they were bird watching (sorry, "birding"). And today while we were out in the front yard, we heard a bird call and were watching it. I remarked how I could see the fun in trying to go to certain places to see birds like in the mov...

What If There's Another Way?

May 14, 2012 08:50

And I'm not saying there is...but what if there was a different way to do this art/music/creative thing we do. Not a contest. Not a lottery. Not a showcase. Nothing you win by luck, skill, or chance. But a new way, that's really the old way. What if you were offered a chance to build your music life the way you want it, with a company you trust, a quality product that is incredible, and a promotional plan that is feasible and actually workable. If you had that, and had to pay for it to ...

Writing What You HAVE to Write

May 02, 2012 17:56

Sometimes there is no reason behind a song you write. I don't mean there's nothing behind the lyrics or the inspiration for the song, I just mean it may never be a song that is meant for any kind of recognition, fame, or even sharing. That may sound strange, but sometimes I think we all put too much expectations on the songs we write, paintings we paint, blogs we blog, or anything we create. We do it and wonder, "I can't wait to see what THIS does!" Oh we may have high and mighty goals and...

Left to My Own Devices

April 30, 2012 20:02

This is the first private blog in a while, although I guess all my blogs are my personal thoughts (much to many of your chagrins!). After a crazy busy first quarter, with more artists and projects signing on every day, I decided to take my lovely wife and head south for a week of relaxation, songwriting, and general staring into the ocean abyss mindlessly. There is nothing like the endless crashing of the waves, as you can see here from our patio, to clean out your ears from months of co...

The "J" Word

June 06, 2009 07:28

click & hear The Jazz in Me You know, people just get plain scared of the "J" word. They see it and automatically form an opinion. It's usually either "I Love it!", or "I don't really like that!" Yes, the term "Jazz" can scare the beans out of people. If they hear a song that is described as jazz, they instantly react, mostly saying "this isn't the kind of thing I'm used to", or hear the word jazz and say "oh, I don't like that". But I see Jazz as less of a music "style" and more of a ...

My Steps Are Ordered

January 01, 2009 19:56

"I don't know if we each have a destiny, or if we're all just floating around accidental-like on a breeze, but I, I think maybe it's both. Maybe both is happening at the same time." - Tom Hanks, "Forrest Gump" "The steps of a good man are ordered by the Lord, and He delights in his way" (Ps 37:23). I was raised in a Christian home. My Mom was the organist at our church, and so we were there whenever the doors opened. To me, God and Jesus were just who I grew up with. I was always "in th...

The Brother-in-Law and the Banjo...

March 19, 2007 05:52

I almost hesitate to tell people what I do anymore. I'll meet a stranger and we're exchanging pleasantries when the subject comes up. "So what do you do in Nashville?" Even though I certainly do work mainly as a music producer, of course every person that hears that seems to think they then need to tell me about the family member they know that is very talented. "A music producer huh? Well our family is very musical. As a matter of fact, my brother-in-law plays the banjo like nobody's b...
