We learned to set our standards from the school. That is to say, we never really learned to set them at all. I would say that a system that relies almost entirely on testing to assess proficiency or competency is faulty. They’ve enhanced some things at school with fancy new gadgets. But by and large, our student performance is worse, and tests are less rigorous. The issue with testing is we are training the students to study for the test—just for the test—and the classroom devolves into the constant refrain of “Will this be on the test?” Set the standards and watch your children surpass them. Adjust upward and repeat.
