Have you ever had the narrative “If I am not successful in this business, it means I am a failure.” Yeah, me too.

My business was my “baby” because my identity was wrapped up in that win or next success. I would ride the wave of success like it was validating everything that I was.

The truth is, our value is not determined by our success.

In this week’s episode of the Epic Success Podcast, I share part of my personal journey from viewing my business as my baby to now viewing it more like a best friend relationship. I dive into how you can separate your identity from your business so that you and your business can thrive in a greater, healthier way, without all the need for validation and hustle.

Ready to dive into worthiness and identity as an entrepreneur? Let’s go!

The biggest take-aways from today’s episode are:

“We are all looking for some kind of validation in our lives in who we are.”

It’s so important to know that if your worth and identity are tied up in your business, you are looking for validation outside yourself. That is very normal. The problem with looking for your worthiness and value from your business is, you then make every success or failure a reflection of you. [8:44]

“Our identity, value and worth comes from who and whose we are, not from what we do and how we serve. That is a by-product of our value.”

Would you ever tell a newborn “sweet child, you will have value as soon as you make 6-figures.” Not at all! We know that our value comes to us the moment we are born, not the moment we do something “deserving” of value. What we do and how we serve is a by-product. [9:50]

“One of the best ways to become the creator of your thoughts and create the thoughts that will get you to where you want to go in your life and business is in this place of identity.”

Your identity is rooted in your beliefs, which are created by your thoughts combined with emotions repeated over time. If you are NOT feeling resistance and tension you’re likely NOT taking risks in your business. Then you’re likely not leaning into the best version of yourself. I now look at failures as validation and complete evidence that I’m on the right path, and that my friend, is a beautiful place to be. [23:11]

Instead of viewing your business as your “baby”, view it as a beautiful, separate entity from you, like a best friend. Like sitting across from you at Starbucks - you’re in one chair and your business is in the other. From that place, you can show up in a way that serves and supports and genuinely enjoys your business. I don’t know if you can tell, but I LOVE my business. It’s fun and fulfilling and I know, if it all went away tomorrow, I would still be me and still find a way to serve. Trust me - that wasn’t always that case - and it took a commitment to training my brain to believe it.

So let me ask you, if your success was inevitable (which we talked about on last week’s episode) and your business was separate from you, how would you show up? And if your business is separate from you, what does it need from you? I’d love to hear! Tag me on social media @drshannonirvine
