Electrical measuring instruments are devices that are used to measure different electrical aspects such as:

Current Voltage Resistance

To know and understand if the connection works properly in an electrical system, the measurement of the above aspects is important. Different industries use diverse kinds of electronic measurement equipment. These instruments range from simplistic ones to complex and advanced options.

The most popular electrical measuring instruments that are used to measure these electrical aspects include ammeters, voltmeter, ohmmeters, and multimeters. Let’s look at each of these instruments:

Ammeters:

Ammeters refer to those electrical measurement tools that measure the flow of current in the circuit. The unit of measurement for these instruments is amperes (A), which is more popularly called “amps” these days. There are many designs of ammeters in the market, companies such as Mektronics Australia has many available designs. Different ammeters can help in testing the presence and amount of current based on the size of the device being tested. Ammeters are handy tools, which should be kept at both households and industrial sites.

Some situations where one can use these instruments are:

Newly constructed and renovated buildingsIn older buildings that might need rewiringTesting electronic devices before they go to markets for saleTesting electronic devices that might malfunction

Simpler ammeters can measure alternating current (AC) or direct current (DC). However, the more sophisticated ones can measure both AC and DC. To measure smaller currents, milliammeters or micro ammeters are also available. They measure current in the milliamperes or micro-amperes. Moving-coil, moving magnet and moving-iron are some examples of different kinds of ammeters.

Voltmeter

As the name suggests, voltmeters are electrical tools that measure the voltage. The units of measurement for voltmeters are “volts”. There are two types of voltmeters:

Analog voltmeterDigital voltmeter

The analog voltmeter leads the hand across a scale in proportion to the voltage of the circuit. However, the digital voltmeter converts the voltage to a digital value with the help of a converted to measure the voltage.

Just like ammeters, voltmeters are also available in many designs like portable voltmeters, moving coil voltmeters, and electrostatic voltmeters.

Ohmmeter

We measure electrical resistance in any circuit in “ohms” and the instrument used for this is the ohmmeter. Correct resistance is an important element for the proper functioning of any installation. Traditionally, ohmmeters used to work with a small battery to apply voltage while measuring resistance. However, ohmmeters are available in the markets today with great quality digital displays. The latest ohmmeters provide great accuracy to measure resistance.

Electricians use an ohmmeter for many home items like a ceramic fuse. When you look at a fuse, you cannot understand with the naked eye if it’s blown or not, here is where an ohmmeter could help you. In this situation, a sign of a short circuit on the ohmmeter means that the fuse is good however, an open circuit would mean that it’s blown. An ohmmeter is a great tool to test devices like Speakers, Stereo cables, speaker coils, guitar pickups, among other electrical devices.

Multimeters

An all in one versatile electronic instrument that is used to measure the three basic electrical properties:

Voltage, Current and Resistance.

In short, this electronic instrument works like an ammeter, ohmmeter, and voltmeter. A multimeter is a handheld device used for testing household wiring, electric motors, batteries, and power supplies. Besides that, it also measures continuity between two points in an electrical circuit. There are three types of multimeters in the market such as digital multimeter, analog multimeter and fluke multimeter.
