In Episode 150 I sit down with the owners of Docs Riverside Taphouse, Jim, Brad, and Kenny Sekulich. This family-owned business is literally within eyesight of the house I grew up in, in Machias, Washington. In 2020 they were targeted for not enforcing the mask mandate, but as you’ll hear in the episode, they did not feel they, as tavern owners, held the authority to force medical mandates on patrons inside of their establishment. This resulted in a couple of different forced closures from the liquor control board. During their second 2 week shutdown, after 15 days of being closed, the Sekulichs received a shipment from a local beer distributor in anticipation of reopening the following day. They were then flagged as violating their shutdown order for accepting shipment during a closure and the government has moved to strip them of their liquor license as a result. This has turned into a multiple-year legal nightmare as the Sekulichs simply want to run their family business and move forward with their lives.
