In the latest episode of the Empowerography Podcast, my guest is Maureen Spataro. A motivational speaker, and a surthriver of multiple sexual and domestic violence traumas which began at the age of 6,  Maureen released her first book “Press Pause; The Breakdown That Rebuilt My Life & Changed a Family Legacy”.  In addition, Maureen was a contributing writer for Bella Magazine with her column “The Beauty of Giving”, and has shared her message of surthrival and hope as a speaker at Georgian Court University in Lakewood, NJ, the Attachment and Trauma Network Conference in Washington DC, The Lightworkers Series at the NJ Arts Center, and What’s Your Story USA.  As a guest on several podcasts and shows including Sonstein Sundays and Women in the Loop on iHeart Radio, Wheelhouse, B*Inspired, and This Is It TV, Maureen’s goal is to share what it took for her to go from “emotional and internal deafness” to creating a life she loves. “The single most important ingredient to moving past trauma or any adversity we face in life is willingness.  When you are in the depths of despair, working through grief, starting over, or trying to move beyond any type of trauma words like strength, courage, resilience and hope are impossible to relate to.  The pain you are experiencing blocks your ability to see those traits within yourself; traits that exist in all of us.  But, willingness?  When someone says they are willing, they are saying “I will try”.  And, each step taken slowly unlocks the strength, courage, resilience and hope we possess.  Our willingness to “put me first”, do the work required to release the pain we carry, and clear that space within for all the good that awaits to land is the groundwork we lay in order to build the life we love.” In February 2022, Maureen re-launched Marilyn’s Place.  Marilyn’s Place is a place for women to gather for peer led support, clinician led workshops, one to ones, and social gatherings.  Maureen’s dream is to open homes throughout the country, and expand the concept of Marilyn’s Place to build a community for women to live, rent free, for a year in order to save their money, complete school or and have a fresh start to create a life they love and deserve, in safe and supportive surroundings. In this episode we discuss being a surthrivor, advocacy work, domestic and sexual violence, Marilyn's House and Press Pause.
