When we talk about understanding dreams or getting a handle on any aspect of our lives, we usually think in terms of words: talking or writing out our thoughts and insights or using techniques that involve conversation or verbal discussion.

However, we can take advantage of one of our other senses—our sight—to visually describe what’s going on in our subconscious. Often when we draw pictures of our dreams we gain new understandings that aren’t seen in words. This is also why art therapy has become an effective tool for healing.

We discuss the uses of art therapy and the role it plays in fostering self-wisdom with Dr. Cheralyn “Chez” Leeby, a licensed marriage and family therapist with over 30 years experience using art therapy in her practice. Chez explains:
• the role art therapy plays in healing
• the issues that can be address through art therapy
• the effectiveness of art therapy for people who can’t draw

Chez also discusses her role in The Goodness Tour, a non-profit group that promotes healing of victims of natural disasters and war through the use of art and music.

Dr. Cheralyn Payton Leeby has an extensive background in the mental health field, working with individual couples and families. She is the founder of Soul Life, an approach focused on resolving, clearing and healing emotional blockages so that clients can experience present moment passion, peace and purpose.
