Another crisis averted in the eyes of the federal government, even if it is not enough for Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. President Joe Biden and House Speaker Kevin McCarthy struck a deal on the evening of Saturday, May 26, to avoid defaulting on the country’s $31 trillion in debt. The agreement needs to pass Congress before it becomes true, but either way, the federal government does what it always does. It will pass the buck over and over, cry that the world will end if the debt ceiling is not raised and then make heroics in the final hour to avoid the default. In reality, stop spending everyone else’s money and the problem would resolve. But that is not how the federal government wants to operate.
