Palliative Care is an approach to providing care that aims at alleviating symptoms and other issues resulting from a life-threatening or life-altering illness in a holistic and patient-centered fashion. Historically, palliative care has not been utilized in the community mental healthcare setting. However, research supports the value of applying palliative care principles when caring for patients with co-morbid serious mental and medical illnesses with the aim of improving quality of life for these patients and their caregivers. Dr. Dax Volle, of UCLA Geriatric Psychiatry, will provide an overview of palliative care principles with the aim of applying these principles in a FSP setting.
