This presentation will provide an overview of the evidence supporting pharmacological and psychosocial treatments for schizophrenia and related psychotic illnesses. This will include a review of the medication options and their side effects. It will address the challenges in engaging people with these illnesses during the first years of illness including the problem of poor treatment adherence. It will focus on strategies for shaping relationships in which clinicians and patients collaborate in managing the person’s illness.
