In our part 2 episode of Amy Winehouses’s “Back to Black” (2006), Angie and Steffi break down the era. We discuss Amy Winehouse’s toxic relationship with Blake Fielder-Civil and how it helped inspire the album. We also discuss Amy’s other personal struggles from this era including her addiction, eating disorder, the pervasive 2000s media, and how this all ultimately led to her untimely death.

In our Era Breakdown episodes, we touch on so many topics like career context, controversies/scandals of the era, marketing, music videos, live performances, album stats, and the album & era’s ultimate impact and legacy. For this episode, we detail Amy’s various personal struggles and how the pervasive 2000s media pushed down on her & other young women at the time. We also discuss Amy Winehouse’s musical legacy and how she paved the way for other up & coming British acts of the time - including of course, Adele.

Again, this is part 2 of the conversation! So make sure you listen to part 1 where we discussed the album track by track.

We hope you enjoyed our Amy Winehouse “Back to Black” journey. RIP Amy.

Album Info: Back to Black is the second and final studio album by English singer and songwriter Amy Winehouse, released on 27 October 2006 by Island Records. Winehouse predominantly based the album on her tumultuous relationship with then-ex-boyfriend and future husband Blake Fielder-Civil, who temporarily left her to pursue his previous ex-girlfriend. Their short-lived separation spurred her to create an album that explores themes of guilt, grief, infidelity, heartbreak and trauma in a relationship.
