At a time when clever animation was casually defined as “whatever Disney was releasing this week,” Ralph Bakshi had his own style, and managed to put his own message into his films. The Lord Of The Rings may have been mistakenly released alongside Rankin/Bass The Hobbit, and The Return Of The King, but do not be mistaken. This film is not the same animal.
