Happy New year and welcome to another chapter in the world of disco, nu and old. In this mix there's well-over two and a half hours of great choons hand-picked from my DJ box. And I'm easing you into a new disco year with a couple of 100bpm-ish tracks beginning with one of my favourites, the unadulterated original version of "Le Spank" by Le Pamplemousse. Did it inspire Barry White's "It's ecstasy when you lay down next to me"? Well, it certainly inspired Robbie Williams' "Rock DJ". Take a listen to them and decide for yourself. I don't think Le Spank was a hit here in the UK (it reached number 58 in the US in 1978) so I'm not sure how I found it as a kid, but if the weather was right I could just about pick up US-music influenced station Beacon Radio (http://tiny.cc/67v41y) over in Wolverhampton so maybe I found it there. Another north American success who didn't transfer it to the UK was Canadian France Joli. Here we have Mr Jazzhole's edit of her 1981 hit "Gonna get over you". Another disco hero who continues to provide inspiration for today's edit-hungry house DJs is Johnny Bristol. In January's mix DJ Laurel takes Johnny's "If I can't stop you" to another level. Then we have a great update of the Hi Gloss classic "You'll never know" edited up by Mix & Fairbanks, and I hope you don't mind guys but I embellished it a bit myself too :-) Later we hit high funk in the form of To the Last Inch's edit of Esther Phillips' 1976 track "All the way down". Better known for her disco classic version of Dinah Washington's "What a difference a day makes" sadly Esther died in 1984 aged only 48. Another stand-out track for me is the Re-Tide remix of "Hold tight" by Change. And who can resist moving to Peaches & Herb's "Shake your groove thing" here updated by Civilian Musique. And there's a beautifully stripped-down version of Candi Staton's "Young hearts run free" from John Morales. For some reason he calls it his Christmas Dub version, so certainly timely! And I LOVE German producer/DJ Joey Chicago's (http://tiny.cc/qpx41y) "You are so beautiful" which for me has echoes of classic Cerrone. I hope you don't mind being compared to another disco legend Joey! Oh, and there's much, much more here to dance and enjoy. X
