Why Is Utility Not Always Valued in Cryptocurrency?

Like any technology or business, cryptocurrencies are supposed to be useful. The thought is, if something solves real-world problems for people cheaply and efficiently, the market will reward the technology by valuing it in the market over competitors which are objectively less useful. It doesn't always seem to turn out this way however, with some of the best projects buried at the bottom of market captialization charts, while inferior competitors are at the top. Or maybe, is there something we're missing? I'm breaking down why it actually makes sense that your favorite cryptocurrency isn't valued higher.
