“If you don’t like ‘Murica, you can get out!!!” That’s what they say, until it happens that is…

Ever wonder why it is that we seem so very pissy about people leaving our country in favor of communist countries?? Well we’ve certainly got some thoughts that will shed some light on that subject. This week on Deviance Welcome, we’re going to touch on the reaction to two different Olympic athletes competing in the Beijing Games, that were born in America and chose to renounce their citizenship, become Chinese nationals, and eventually, compete for the Chinese team.

Eileen Gu and Zhu Yi are awfully polarizing figures, and we find that pretty interesting, given the typical response listed above. We’re going to rip apart the spin, dive into what’s really going on, and discuss why it’s such a big problem for American born athletes to compete under China’s flag, especially considering that most of the complaints come from people who were supposed to be boycotting the games anyway. Controversy awaits you!!

In this Episode:

Eileen Gu

Zhu Yi

History of “defection”

The Chinese and American response

and more!!
