🇫🇷7-French Lesson - Au restaurant 👩‍🍳

Today, I am inviting you to a French restaurant with Liliane and Michel. Please try to understand the dialogue and notice the accent from Marseille, in the South of France.

 -Excusez-moi! Bonjour! Le menu, s’il-vous-plaît
-Oui, un moment. Vous voulez boire?
-Oui, je veux de l’eau, s’il vous plait. J’ai soif. Merci!
-Vous voulez manger?
-Oui, j’ai très faim, je veux manger du pain, de la viande, des pommes de terre et du fromage. Je veux boire du vin blanc.
-Et vous, Madame?
-Je veux manger du poisson, des légumes et de la salade
-Vous voulez un dessert?
-Oui, nous voulons deux desserts et deux cafés.
-Bon Appétit!

1-Vocabulary:
Let’s review a few words. Do you remember how to say I am thirsty and I am hungry?
- I am thirsty: J’ai soif
- I am hungry: J’ai faim

We also learned how to say “to eat” and “to drink”:
-Tu veux boire? Means: Do you want to drink?
-Tu veux manger? Means: Do you want to eat?

Finally, Liliane wants some “vin blanc”, do you remember your colors:
⚫️NOIR / ⚪️BLANC / 🔘GRIS

 New vocabulary:
-Le menu: Even though the word is the same in English, note the French way to say “Menu” 
-Un moment: The word is the same in English, but the intonation is different. 
-Excusez-moi!: Excusez-moi means “Excuse me”, just like in English!

Food from the menu:
🥖Le pain: the bread
🍖la viande: the meat
🥔les pommes de terre: the potatoes (the apples from the ground)
🐟Le poisson: the fish
🍷Le vin: the wine
🥦Les légumes: the vegetables
🧀Le fromage: the cheese
🥗La salade: the salad
🍰Les desserts: the desserts

Liliane said:
je veux manger du pain, de la viande, des pommes de terre et du fromage

 Then, I added:
Je veux boire de l’eau, je veux manger du poisson, des légumes et de la salade

When referring to food or drinks, we use “some” in front of a noun, as we can’t count how much meat, water, fish or vegetable we are planning to eat or drink. This grammatical technique is also used in English.

Je veux de la viande, du poisson, de l’eau et du vin.
For: I want some meat, some fish, some water, and some wine.

❗️Liliane is asking for two coffees and two desserts, so you know that she is planning to finish them all! You go, Liliane!

Based on the gender of the noun and its singular/plural form, the French use different articles:

Masculine nouns: LE becomes DU
le fromage: DU fromage – Je veux du fromage
Le pain: DU pain
Le poisson: DU poisson

 Feminine nouns: LA becomes DE LA
La viande: DE LA viande – Je veux de la viande
La salade: DE LA salade
L’eau – DE l’eau*
*Because the word “eau” starts with a vowel, DE LA EAU is abbreviated by “DE L’EAU” for a better flow in the sentence. 

 Plurial: LES becomes DES regardless of the gender
Les légumes: DES légumes – Je veux des légumes
Les pommes de terre: DES pommes de terre

2-Grammar: 
Throughout the text, the verb “vouloir” was repeated several times. Vouloir means “to want.” Just like in English “vouloir” can be used before a verb or a noun.
Vous voulez boire?
Je veux manger du pain
je veux de l’eau
Vous voulez un dessert?
Nous voulons deux cafés.

Let’s conjugate the verb Vouloir
I want - Je veux
You want - Tu veux
He/she wants - Il/elle veut
We want - Nous voulons
You want - Vous voulez
They want - Ils/elles veulent
