This is one of the most important things an Independent Contractor courier HAS to think about with their delivery business: Insurance.

If you are delivering for pay, most personal policies specifically exempt you from coverage.

That means you are uninsured. If an accident happens while you are even logged into a delivery app, you are not covered by your insurance and little if any coverage from the delivery company.

Who's going to pay your car loan off when it gets totaled and the bank calls the loan in? Your insurance company isn't. Grubhub isn't. Doordash isn't.

It is imperative you understand your coverage, find out if your insurance company offers a rider or endorsement that covers you, and if not you either quit delivering this moment or you get the right kind of coverage.

It is not worth the risk.

If you think you can just pretend you aren't delivering, keep the bags hidden in the trunk, check out the picture in this article. I know, that's a worst case scenario, our thoughts and prayers are with the family and friends of the driver involved here. But isn't that the whole point of insurance? For the worst case scenario.

Don't take chances, Courier Nation.
