I wasn't that far under the mark. In 2016, when this was recorded, 37,461 people were killed in 34,436 motor vehicle crashes, an average of 102 per day, or 12.4 per 100,000 people per year. Japan, on the other hand, only had 4.1 traffic fatalities per 100,000 persons per year, meaning that America has more than triple the fatalities Japan does on average. In 2018, the number of traffic deaths in the US reached an estimated 40,000. Be safe on the highways out there, people!
