It’s funny to think about what has — and hasn’t — changed for fledgling developer careers over the past several decades. Both Katie Mallinson, Full Stack Developer at Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE), and Royce Willmschen, Senior Manager of Software Engineering at HPE, have unique upbringings in the development space. Royce began his development career in the early 1980s and has since become a senior manager at one of the most notable IT companies in the world, while Katie’s development repertoire is beginning to flourish as her career continues to grow.
Decoded host Sydney Lai sat down with Katie and Royce to discuss their career journeys and how to successfully transition from student to junior developer. Royce and Katie also discuss the importance of mentorships and how that can help shape the course of your career as a developer.
Other discussion topics include:
What got both Katie and Royce interested in software development;
What the hiring process looked like for them at the beginning of their careers;
Aspects of the developer world that Katie wasn’t aware prior to getting her first gig; and
How junior developers can continue to climb up the professional ladder by understanding how top-tier companies recruit, retain, and mentor their employees.
