Through the lockdown, many people have been experiencing the use of teleconferencing for the first time. Zoom, Microsoft Teams and other video platforms, have made it possible to connect people from around the world in conversations that push past the inherited boundaries and expectation that people have had about engaging with media. John Coster has been developing the ‘newsroom’ as a model for online engagement that can facilitate a more inclusive and purposeful approach to discussion about topics of social concern. In this interview, John explains what the origins for the newsroom concept are, and how he’s developed it as part of his work with schools, local authorities and civic society groups and organisations.
