Ep.44 | Patriots New Era Has Arrived, And Belichick Isn’t Done Yet

Bill Belichick opened his wallet, manipulated the salary cap, revamped the entire offense in two days, and rumor has it, he may not be close to finished. The New England Patriots have really treated their fans to an exciting two days. We have all collectively sat by our phones refreshing pages of every blue checkmark on Twitter, and we have been rewarded with Hunter Henry, Jonnue Smith, Nelson Agholor, Matthew Judon, a couple run stoppers, Secondary help, and some more wide receiver depth.

If Belichick stopped right there, I think most Patriots would head into the 2021 NFL Draft happy. However, Belichick has back loaded all the contracts, and with the salary cap expected to significantly rise next season due to massive TV deals, Belichick found himself in the right place at the right time, and he has somehow taken the team Tom Brady abandoned in 2020, and has made them competitive in 2021 and beyond.

The quarterback situation for 2021 is still questionable. The 2020 season didn’t go well for Cam Newton, but Patriots fans should stay patient for a few different reasons. 1) You have to give Cam the benefit of the doubt, no camp, no offensive weapons, etc… Cam now has the opportunity to prove he still has it. 2) Don’t discount Belichick bringing in another veteran QB. We could see Jimmy Garoppolo, or Belichick could shock the world and trade for Deshaun Watson. 3) Because the Patriots were able to address a lot of their roster holes during free agency, so Belichick is in the perfect position to use his Draft capital and move up for one of the top quarterbacks in the Draft like Justin Fields, Zach Wilson, or Trey Lance.

Even if 2021 turns out to bet a let down for New England, Belichick has set the team up to be successful for a long time. However, even though we should temper our expectations a little bit, it’s a little difficult not to get excited for this season.
