The New England Patriots trading for Jimmy Garoppolo narrative is really heating up. It’s been a topic of conversation amongst the media and the Patriots fan base for weeks. It’s been talked about a lot on the Dear Pats Nation Podcast, at least once a week, but the last weekend really has anybody who covers the Patriots in a frenzy.

Let’s start from the beginning, between Free Agency and trade, which quarterbacks are most likely available: Cam Newton, Ryan Fitzpatrick, Jameis Winston, Marcus Mariota, Jacoby Brissett, and Deshaun Watson. Out of the QB’s listed, Watson doesn’t feel like a realistic option, and yes there are other quarterbacks available that weren’t listed, but outside of Watson, this list is the best of the worst.

New England has two options, sign one of the veterans listed and draft a quarterback like Mac Jones or Trey Lance in the upcoming NFL Draft, a move that will probably force the Patriots to trade up. Option two, call the San Francisco 49ers and make an offer they can’t refuse and take on Jimmy Garoppolo’s $24 million contract.

Garoppolo wouldn’t be a bridge quarterback for New England, if the Patriots made this move and brought Jimmy G home, they would be trading for him as their franchise quarterback. This puts the Patriots in a tough spot, currently the 49ers have no reason to trade Garoppolo outside of getting out from under his contract. San Francisco doesn’t have an option to replace Garoppolo, because of this, Bill Belichick would have to present an offer that the 49ers couldn’t refuse. The reality of that offer means, the Patriots would have to what most would perceive as over pay for Jimmy G.

The Patriots can’t go wrong and can fail miserably with either option, that’s what happens when you no longer have the stability Tom Brady gave them at the quarterback position. However, living in the past doesn’t solve the Patriots current situation, regardless of what option Belichick chooses, he’s going to do something, and the results won’t impact just the 2021 season, it will impact the Patriots future in its entirety.
